DefendersMysticGardenTitle

Defenders of the Mystic Garden, a fantasy-themed tower defense game, is the second Mini from Twisted Dragon Media, makers of M.O.Z.O.X. Space Salvager. Or I should really say maker, since it’s essentially a one-person operation. Although I found M.O.Z.O.X. to be a fun space shooter, it was somewhat on the simple side, especially in comparison to titles from larger companies. So the developer made a determined effort to put more polish in his second title, and for the most part, it shows.

Tower defense is a genre I pretty much missed out on until Minis came around. Essentially it’s a strategy game where you must place units (originally towers, I guess) somewhere on the playing field to automatically destroy incoming invaders. In most of these games, the enemy follows a fixed route, so you have to figure out where the best spots to put units are, as well as which unit to put where, there being some differences between your defenders—how they attack and what special powers they can use.

i KILL ZOMBIES LOGO

This is the first time that Open Emotion Studios has released a mature-themed game. As soon as you fire up I Kill Zombies, those cute blocks from Mad Blocker Alpha show up on screen bathed in blood. F-words then rain down on you, and the game isn’t shy about it since the swearing is also spelled out in the subtitles.

It is rather a jarring experience, knowing that the studio has previously always released family-friendly games. Now, we have this gory, swear-laden zombie-killing game in I Kill Zombies. Good thing this game still retains what the studio is known for: a bevy of content. However, it also comes with the bad, too. I Kill Zombies is an unpolished game.

lagridlock1

I haven’t reviewed the recently released Minis because, for whatever reason, they can’t be played on my PlayStation Vita. Fortunately, most of the SCEE Minis released last week are compatible with the Vita.

L.A. Gridlock is one of those Minis that managed to sneak up on us, without much PR. Actually, the ever mysterious forum poster Grayback (conspiracy theory suggests he/she is a gaming industry insider) posted a link in the forums a couple of months ago regarding this game. We were not able to report on it in the main blog because the source was in French, and Google’s translation engine might have wrongly translated the news snippet.

We know now, though, that L.A. Gridlock is a tower defense game. TD games in the Minis program were aplenty back in 2010 but then died down. Now, it seems like they are having a comeback, with this and Defenders of the Mystic Garden (review forthcoming). But what separates L.A. Gridlock from the rest of the TD games is its use of a “realistic” setting: Los Angeles!
