Right now I just have a PSP. I'm debating between an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3. I was wondering which you think has better downloadable games? I like retro and puzzle games, and both seem to offer these choices.
Xbox Live versus Playstation Network Games choice?

There's no comparison: XBLA and Indie pwn PSN, though it pains me to say it.
Super Meat Boy. That is all...

I have an Xbox, but I believe that PS3 is probably better overall as a console. 360 has much better downloadable games though.

I only have (and want) a PS3 so I'd be completly biased if I voted. So I'm not going to vote.

Interesting. I figured given that this forum is for PSP, it would be biased towards Playstation 3 anyway, but apparently, it's not.
For what it's worth, there's a nice hardware comparison on IGN and Playstation 3 won out in the comparison, but personally, I go for variety and quality of games.
I dig my PSP, but the Xbox 360 still is tempting.

I have about 90 XBLA games, and they're all right, but they don't have very many good deals. After over a year of seeing all the deals Steam has on their games I don't know why Microsoft can't swing it themselves. Also if you want retro games 360 has that arcade set up for older games (Game Room). I don't know if they currently still support it, but it may be worth looking into.

If you want to play online I'd go with a PS3. With that $50 a year you could be getting PS+ instead of Live gold.

I guess the new 360s have built in WiFi. But the one I have doesn't, so the only way I can connect it to the internet is to drag a wire from my router to it (which is like 3 rooms away).
So I don't use it much for downloadable games (especially since it's an early 360 and is loud and hot and probably going to die soon).
The other issue (which may have been fixed) is that the d-pad of the 360 controller is truly terrible. (It was fine on the original Xbox, so why MS messed it up is beyond me). I would not want to play any game that requires a d-pad on it.
Posted 11 months ago # -
I haven't played any games that require the D-pad. (Except for simple things, so it doesn't really matter)

Jeremy, Microsoft released a controller not that long ago, where the D pad twist. When you twist it, it raises the D pad to closely resemble Nintendo's D pad. Twist it back and it reverts back to it's original form. I hear it's still pretty bad either way. And yeah, the new 360 have built in WiFi.
I can't honestly vote, because I only have a 360. But I'll comment.
I pay 40 bucks a year for my Live subscription, and to be honest, it's not something I really mind. I would mind paying for PSN+ if I had a PS3, which is why I won't when I finally get a PS3. I can't comment on all that's available on PSN, but there are alot of great games available on the Arcade. On the plus side of paying the Live fee, we get multiplatform games and add-ons weeks, sometimes months, before they show up on PSN. That for alot of people, is good enough reason to get a 360.
We don't get very many sales on games though. Usually when they do come around it's for games most people already have (including you), or if the game features multiplayer, it doesn't have that big (if any) of a community anymore. Sometimes some good sales roll through though. Alot of great games hit the Arcade for their summer time event, which should be coming up real soon.

360 easy.

Deals aside (and I think there are good deals every month on XBLA IMO), there's truly no comparison in terms of the service you get on Xbox Live Gold as opposed to the free/paid services on PSN.
Things just work better and there's less friction between you and buying stuff or playing stuff/setting up parties, etc.
I've got around 100 titles download-only on my 360 and so many of them can't be played on PS3. It's a shame, but it's also a fact. :(

And the other thing, it seems like we might be seeing many PSN games being ported to the Vita.
So if you plan on getting it, a PS3 might be redundant...

As I only have a PS3, I can't vote, either. However, regarding the question, "Which has better downloadable games?", I'll note that both services have platform-exclusive games that are very good and unique. I only know of such on XBLA by reputation, but on the PS3, there are titles like thatgamecompany's games (flOw, Flower, and the upcoming Journey), Jonathan Mak's Everyday Shooter, Sony's echochrome, Q-Games' PixelJunk series (e.g., Racers, Monsters, Eden, Shooter), Rockin' Androids doujin imports (e.g., Gundemonium Collection, Crescent Pale Mist), etc.
However, specifically in the realm of retro games (as in remakes, not just homages), I think XBLA has several more than PSN. In the year between XBLA and the PS3 launching, I remember a bunch of retro arcade games being ported to XBLA. It sort of seemed like XBLA was going to become the place for classic games to be reborn . . . but then all that sort of died out. By the time the PS3 came around, classic remakes seemed to stop being popular, so many of those old games didn't make it to the PS3 (though Sony Online Entertainment did publish a few on the PS Store). Maybe the iPhone's rise had something to do with it, too. More recently, XBLA has started the Game Room part of the service, but I've personally only heard complaints and derision about it. I think people don't like the pricing model, as well as the selection.
That thing about the Xbox's D-pad is definitely something to think about. I tried playing Ms. Pac-Man on a store kiosk once and was surprisingly infuriated by the absurdly awful input accuracy (I had not read about the D-pad's reputation yet at the time, so it was a real shock). That was the old controller, though. IGN's review of the new controller claimed the improvement on the D-pad was marginal.
Oh, also, XBLA does have more scrolling shooter remakes than PSN, to my great disappointment. :) I think the selection includes Ikaruga, RayStorm, Triggerheart Exelica, Rez. And, if you get a Japanese Xbox 360, you have available all of Cave's bullet hell shooters (mostly on disc, and quite pricey).

When I was given my 360 as a Christmas gift 3 years ago, I was on the fence on if I even needed to get a PS3. But when I found out about Journey shortly after, I made up my mind that I would. The look and mystery of it really caught my attention.
Didn't RayStorm HD get released on PSN?

If you just care about DLable games get a 360, but if you want to play something called exclusive disc games you're going to have to get a PS3. My 360 only plays gears because theres no other good exclusives (except Dead rising and Alan Wake is average). The 360 has Halo 1 remake, Halo 4, Halo 5, Halo 6 and gears 3 coming out in the near future while the PS3 has nearly 20 games confirmed to be out by the end of 2012 (ignoring Kinect & Move garbage of course). Basically if you only care about DLable games get 360, if you want to play the greatest games this generation has get a PS3.

milo, I think dead rising 2 is cross platform (don't quote me)
XBL has MUCH better downloadable exclusives. The podcast Co-Op ,RIP, used to feature them all the time, specifically Indie titles. BUT! They also are supposed to have lots. and lots of garbage titles.
PSN has nothing exciting as far as downloadable exclusives go, (unless the new game, Outlands, was exclusive) BUT! The full fledged exclusives are amazing. XBox has nothing to compare with LittleBigPlanet or Uncharted. InFamous stands out as well.Oh, one other note, XBL gets most DLC (specifically map packs) first. While no one tends to actually play online with this DLC, since everyone has to have it in order to use it, they do still get first crack at it.

confuletyl- I have Dead Rising 2 for the PS3 and the 1st one is a 360 exclusive, the first one is alot better too. I agree with everything you said, though Flower, Journey and the Pixeljunk games are good the 360 has alot more LIVE exclusives (though some are bad). My ethernet cable broke and I always forget to get a new one so I can't play any new arcade games.

RayStorm HD was released on PSN only in Japan. Apparently, it did not release in other territories "yet" for reasons that Square Enix is not allowed to talk about. The first thought that comes to mind is that it's some sort of Microsoft-arranged exclusivity deal; considering how long it's been with still no RayStorm HD on PSN outside Japan, this seems to be the most likely scenario. It's okay with me, though, since I do have non-HD RayStorm in the PS2 Taito Legends 2 collection.
I'm still mad at Square Enix for never releasing DariusBurst outside Asia, though, despite having had it rated in at least the US and Germany.
An upcoming XBLA scrolling shooter remake I wish would come to PSN: a Holy Grail for some on the Sega Saturn, Radiant Silvergun, from Treasure (who put their Dreamcast cult hit Ikaruga on XBLA).
Posted 11 months ago # -
Isn't Ikaruga the spiritual successor to Radiant Silvergun? Kind of like how Perfect Dark is to Goldeneye.

omg I forgot about flower. Hands down one of my favourite games. My daughter keeps making me play it. beaut
never played more than the pixeljunk demos (save monsters, must have psp title, 10/10) what is journey that everyone is going on about?
Posted 11 months ago # -
Journey is the new game from the guys that made Flower. You should check out Pixeljunk Eden though, its one of my favorite platformers. (I tried to get you a link to a video for Journey but my computer keeps freezing so I'm going to turn it off to be safe)
Posted 11 months ago # -
Yes, I do believe I read somewhere that Ikaruga had a project title of "RS2" or something, though I'm not sure the games are otherwise related. How odd to hear scrolling shooter trivia from Ofaliss! ;P
Ofaliss linked a trailer from E3 2011 for Journey above, conf/milo128.
I have PixelJunk Eden. Quite challenging, though also very beautiful and absolutely distinctive. I was never able to get my last Trophy for it, the one where you never waste any pollen (didn't get the expansion, so none of those Trophies either). The multiplayer in the game is pretty fun.

Wow! I only have 4. :( I have all the Pixeljunk games to date and have got to say they're some of the best games on PSN.
I also have flOw on the PS3, didn't really like it but it was free for a week last year. :)

Indeed, some of Eden's Trophies took rather the effort to attain (and they were almost all bronzes, too). The most fun ones to get were definitely the multiplayer ones; I have fond memories of having relatives helping me get the one about smacking some high number of pollen pods in a single leap, which we did by loading all of us into that cannon on, I think, Garden 8.
Eden had an update released for it while I was playing, an update which made the game somewhat easier after all the feedback on its difficulty (e.g., the energy recharge items gave you more energy each, after the update). It happened to occur right when I hit Garden 7, which was giving me a real hard time, so I was quite thankful.
I'm really looking forward to PixelJunk SideScroller--no surprise, eh? :D
I also have flOw on the PS3, didn't really like it but it was free for a week last year. :)
Yeah, in terms of gameplay, flOw isn't too interesting, but its visual and aural aesthetics are really striking. It's almost like "Wait, am I looking at a game or a marine life documentary?" The evolution from flOw to Flower can be easily traced; the former laid the foundation for the atmosphere, and the latter added the soul.

I have flOw on my PSP, it was one of my first PSN purchases. I don't hate or enjoy it, but there's something very soothing and violent about it. I put it back on my PSP from time to time, when I'm in the mode for simple gameplay.

@onmode-ky
I can't quote on the PSP but in regards to the comment about PixelJunk SideScroller:
If you get all the diamonds in PixelJunk Shooter 2 you unlock a demo level or something of SideScroller. I haven't beat it yet because I gave up after I died once. :DPosted 11 months ago # -

That's an interesting thing to say. About anything! I suppose some of those creatures do get a little vicious, though.
Balrog, I don't have either PixelJunk Shooter, but maybe I should remedy that. That just reminded me of 2 more very good PS Store exclusives: Gravity Crash (which I got instead of the first PixelJunk Shooter when they both came out) and Shatter.
