The PSP is for true gamers, and true gamers want to be concentrated in their game, just like a good book. Now imagine yourself playing God of War in a middle of big Boss fight, and suddenly you get a call and your PSPhone returns to the home menu. This is not how Awesome Games should be played. Respect the games.
Why I think PSP and phone should not be mixed

I think Sony would be smart enough to have a resume feature, if they did make a PSPhone.

What if, instead of returning to the home menu, the system would sound the ringtone while Kratos and the boss looked around them and asked each other, "What in Hades is that horrific noise?!"

phones do not have the lifespan as handhald gaming machines
psp2 should be able to outlast 3 or 4 PSP phones, that's why the shouldn't be mixed ... ever. gamers don't want to buy another machine every other your while a lot of providers like to offer this upgrade in the same timespan just to get you to renew the contract
that's why phone mannufacturers can afford to build a new one with new hardware every 6 monthsPSP2 on the other hand has to last 5 to 10 years, it needs to be state of all available arts when it comes out if it wants to compete 5 or 10 years down the line.
Sony can afford to lose money on every PSP sold because they make up for that in games ... apple doesn't have that luxuarythey are two completely different markets

@snif raises a good point. I think the best action would be if the call went straight to voicemail. It's not like it could be as important as the gaming action :)

PSPphone is a stupid idea. Look at Nintendo there handhelds sell like crack. The new 3DS is purely a handheld device with NO cellphone capability add into it and you know that it will sell like crazy. Sony better not be trying to be a damn iPhone for their next PSP2.

a pspphone should compete with Iphone, with it's own (unique?) mini's programme to compete with the Aps store while PSP2 dukes it out with 3DS
I wouldn´t buy it so (wont be buying a smartphone any time soon either, all I want my phone to do is make phonecalls) I hope these minis would be psp2 compatible :D
I think it would be great from a developers point of view
like a stepping stone into full game design ... hell they could put out 3 or 4 mini's while working on a full PSP title and call it a franchise :)Posted 1 year ago # -
Perhaps we're focusing on the wrong thing. A phone-enabled portable computing device brings two key capabilities, wireless voice (phone calls) and wireless data (internet) connectivity.
I would agree that a PSP with integrated wireless voice/phone calls isn't partiularly interesting and (to some people) is a pointless mix.
However, what I think is a more compelling prospect is a wireless-broadband (3G) enabled PSP. It would be useful to have an IP-enabled PSP that has a permanent internet connection. This could then be used to have anywhere/anytime access to the PSN and to play online multiplayer games.
That's the real thing that makes smart phones so popular & useful. They are connected to the internet at all times (assuming you have a signal of course). Mobile email, web browsing, social media and all the app store stuff is a nice side effect of pervasive ubiquitous internet connectivity.
I don't really play online multiplayer games on my PSP, but even I download new PSN games and rent new movies at least once a week. If my PSP had 3G connetivity, then that would give a little more flexibility regarding when/where I access the PSN.
But no, I'm not especially excited at the prospect of making phone calls from my PSP. Chatting in-game during multiplayer games using VoIP perhaps, but not phone calls. When I'm gaming, I'm gaming. I don't wish to be disturbed ;-)

I agree completely with you Volcane. I vaguely recall something when the 3DS was announced about it maybe having support for a wireless broadband connection via the phone networks...but I could be mistaken about that.

is it possible you read this from Wikipedia (its not directly about the 3DS):
speaking about the future for Nintendo's portable consoles, company president Satoru Iwata mentioned that while mobile connectivity via subscription mobile broadband "doesn't fit Nintendo customers," he was interested in exploring an option similar to the Whispernet service for the Amazon Kindle, in which users are not charged for the mobile connectivity, and the costs are cross-subsidized.
I do sincerely hope that will happen (easily would make me buy a 3DS), but since Nintendo hasnt bragged about it being a feature yet, I doubt that it is going happen with the 3DS.as for:

why wouldn't the phone have the ability turn off taking phonecalls while playing games? and how is that any different from having any other phone go off while playing?Additionally, where is this coming from? the 'psphone' rumors dont even state psp compatibility with the device, thus its just a phone, being made in association with sony.
you dont even have to buy it if you dont want it.
do you really need to have such strong opinions on something that might not even exist, and definitely wont effect you?Posted 1 year ago # -
People aren't really thinking when it comes to a PSPhone. Sony can make a PSPhone that is a phone that offers PlayStation quality gaming. It can just be a phone that in no way relates to the PSP, but relates to gaming.
It'll be cool if it did offer PSP connectivity, that way more people could connect on certain multiplatform games like Peace Walker or Monster Hunter type games, but they still don't have to be the same device. It could run the Android operating system so it could still compete with Apple, but not the Android market also, that keeps it from being the third wheel so to speak.
I don't like the idea of a PSP phone, but I think a PSPhone would be pretty cool (not for me though, I'm not really into cell phones).
