I get it means more sales but that still undermines the purpose of the minis program. You all know by now why WTF!? was delayed, and it's unfair because of the fact, minis aren't very mini, if they're being delayed because of a console now are they? The PSP has maybe 3-4 PSN PS3 exclusives that have been ported, so why does the PS3 get every mini now? The resident shooter hater finally gets a shooter I'm interested in, but I have to wait because the PS3 is greedy (as you can tell, I really wanted to play WTF?! today :D)! If it was me, I would have released it anyway and patched it via update, seeing as they said it won't take long to fix anyway.
Why are minis available for the PS3?

PS3 playes like minis too! Like what else are you supposed to use the extra $3 for?Posted 1 year ago # -
Look at it this way, they both play PS1 games

They delayed WTF!!! That ticks me off.

@Ofaliss
Im with you man. Minis are and were suppose to be played on a PSP not on a PS3. PS3 was later added to the minis program because A. More money and B. Not a lot people have PSP's in the States and Europe, as we all know PSP sells like crazy only in Japan =(. I have a PS3 but I don't play minis on it. Why? Because most of them look ugly and pix elated when you play them on a big screen that is not the size of the PSP and MINIS are suppose to be games that you play on the go, while you are outside or on the toilet. WTF was suppose to be out today, they told us that the issue is a minor problem that is quick to fix, yet the release date has been push to November WTF?!

the psn really acts like a bureaucracy, in other words: "Your paperwork has a small mistake in it you just noticed? Fix it, then go to the back of the line please." "You know its a pretty large line (took me weeks to get here), I just checked the wrong box, can I just fix it here, really, it'll only take a second..." "sorry, no exceptions!".if I had to blame something for the long delay, I'd blame the way Sony functions when it comes to the psn..... dont blame the ps3 compatibility for all of your problems, I actually think its a great thing, for both the consumer and the publisher.

@Carson
I think it's great mainly for the publisher, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, you guys deserve your money. It's just that if this program was designed for the PSP, then PSP owners shouldn't be forced to wait for a game because of the PS3. Shazbots says it best..."...MINIS are suppose to be games that you play on the go, while you are outside or on the toilet..."

Minis are available for the PS3 because it makes sense for everyone. Developers make more money, thus they can create better games (or create any games at all).
Sure, the thing that happened to WTF can be frustrating, but I am sure that the extra sales they will get via the PS3 will take away the frustration easily. And they will be able to make another game and that's a good thing for players as well, right?Posted 1 year ago # -
I started this discussion because I was irked by WTF?! being delayed, I already knew no matter what, developers were going to defend minis being on the PS3 (BTW, thanks Carson for giving me an answer other than, "We get more money.") and that most of the more active members of this site would ignore this discussion altogether. So with that being said, this is my final response on this discussion...
Everybody has a PSP, but nobody wants a PSP.

I love the fact that it's playable on both. minis didn't catch my attention until ps3 compatibility was announced. It feels like im buying 2 games for the price of one.
I mainly play them on my PSP. but it's nice to have cross compatibility. Now... if only the save files would auto update when you would hook up your PSP to the Ps3... :|
Ps3 support is a win for everyone.

Auto updating would be awesome

imo the question is why are full PSP games not playable on PS3 while mini's are?
I'm sure there's a good reason but it would be great if I could get a title of PSN and put it on both PSP and PS3 so that I can play it on the road then hotsync my savegame to my PS3 and continue playing when I'm at home
never gave that much thought (don't have a ps3 yet tbh, I fell for microsofts big talk ;)) untill recently when I got Peace Walker and Valkyria Chronicles, normally when I'm at home I play on my xbox or PC but these games are difficult to put down!
instead of sitting on my couch playing PSP I'd like to have it on the big screen ... bought a cable to use the TVout but it looked terrible, the colours were all screwed up, washed out and crappy!Posted 1 year ago # -
What cable did you use? I have a (Sony) component cable, which I got for a very nice price, and everything looks great on my TV. Well, there's the aspect ratio thing due to the pixel shape difference, but that aside, it looks great.

not sure actually :D
I'd have to check it when I get home, maybe it's just my tv screwing me over

I'm sure there is a technical reason for this, but I suspect the underlying reason has more to do with the fact that Sony make more money if you purchase two copies of the game, one for each platform ;-)

Interestingly, this is apparently one of the goals behind Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. Windows Phone 7 is essentially Microsoft's portable Xbox device (from a gaming perspective). The Windows Phone 7 game development platform is Silverlight and XNA. As well as allowing developers to use the same skills/technologies to develop Xbox 360 games as they do to create Windows Phone 7 games, the intention is that Xbox Live will provide the enabling infrastructure that will permit game experiences to be extended across Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7. I don't think that we'll see gamers playing the exact same games on each device (due to the obvious hardware/connectivity differences and different usage scenarios), but players will be able to continue the gaming experience from different devices and have the gamestate kept in sync via the cloud.
If that works out for Microsoft (and I think it might), then I would imagine that Sony would do something similar as they already have most of the required infrastructure in place and so it seems like an obvious direction for them to move in.
For those that are interested, here is a list of the first 50 game titles expected on Windows Phone 7 (note the triple-A 'Halo' title "Halo Waypoint"):

why are full PSP games not playable on PS3
I believe the short answer would be that emulation is difficult.
to my knowledge, psp emulators on pc, only play a handful of titles.
essentially, minis are simple, making them easy to emulate, full psp games would likely have problems being played on the ps3, meaning sony cant let that happen.Posted 1 year ago # -
Carson, if I'm reading you right, you're saying that you think Minis are a separate platform, where both the PS3 and PSP are running emulation layers wrapped around the machine code. I don't think this is the case. As an example, I point to the Minis that run on the Vicious Engine. Unless a completely separate version of the Engine were built just for Minis, which seems unlikely to me, that's PSP-native. So, this means that when the PS3 runs a Mini, it's just running a PSP emulator. Granted, this PSP emulator may not support every PSP instruction/capability (and it seems to have the occasional bug, given what happened with WTF), or maybe it has inefficient support in some routines that might result in screwed-up sound or graphics, but I would guess that it's still compatible with the majority of non-Mini PSP games, considering its compatibility with Minis.
Thus, I believe the primary reason for the PS3 not being able to run non-Mini PSP games is the continued need for UMDs to be supported at retail; PS3s do not have UMD drives. If the PSP2 does go the download-only path, then I think all PSP2 games will indeed be playable on the PS3.
You know, assuming the PS3 does run a PSP emulator to play Minis, I'm curious how well it runs a game like God of War: Ghost of Sparta, a game where I'm pretty sure the developers must have pulled some unusual tricks to get the game performing like it does on the PSP. I'd be willing to bet a dollar that the emulator screws up a bit for that game.

no, I'm not saying minis aren't psp games,
I'm just saying the various restrictions put on them (ei. the representative from gamevil mentioned that they had to underclock the cpu, I'm assuming because its a mini) allow them to be easily emulated on the ps3, whereas psp games that have no limitations placed upon them would have much more problems on the ps3 (so much so that it would likely be unwise to allow ps3 users to buy the games)

you seem to be somewhat echoing what I meant.Posted 1 year ago # -
good points!

but tbh I think a title like Valkyria Chronicles would sell more copies if PS3 users could get in on the fun ... sure it's not PS3 quality but it doesn't come at a PS3 price either and it's brilliant fun!

@sp3c
The reason why Valkyria Chronicles became a PSP series is because the first didn't sell well on the PS3.If they released PSP games on both the PSP and PS3, then what's the point of a PSP? Sure you can play your games on the go, but most people wouldn't spend $300, buy the games, then spend another $200 on a PSP to play games, they play now at home.
Also keep in mind, last time I checked, there are more PSP's floating around than PS3's and 360's combined (it's been a few months since I last did the math, that may not be the case anymore) so developer's in theory (damn pirates) stand to make more money on the PSP. They could also potentially lose money, if the games don't sell well because of the added cost of developing for both systems, not to mention prices of cheaper games would go up, to compensate for that. It goes back to what I said already, everybody has a PSP, but nobody wants a PSP.
You really think about it, if they just started releasing everything for everything, you may as well have one system on the market, and NOBODY wants that.
Dang it, I posted again!

@blacklabgames
I bet. Why make good games when you can shove out crap because no one has a choice. No thank you broham.I'm not saying you guys would, but I rather not leave it to chance. I'll take faboy wars and red rings, over a single system anyday.

Uh . . . what??? How in the world does having a single system for which to develop lead to only making crap games?! It's not like having only one system means every developer suddenly stops competing with other developers. Conversely, having multiple systems available does not mean it's impossible for one system to end up with nothing but crap on it (Gizmondo, Tiger Game.com, Emerson Arcadia?).
