I was just thinking about how much I was hoping Pac-Man CE was released in the US today, and then it hit me...I don't even like Pac-Man games!

Maybe it's the fact that I'm a sucker for anything that makes me think of neon lights, which makes me think of Daft Punk, which makes me think of Stronger, which makes me think of Akira...but I digress. I've always sort of felt like Pac-Man was WAY too overrated for it's own good, BUT it's not the most overrated in my opinion.

Madden, that's right I said it, Madden! I for the life of me can't figure out why people look forward to paying $60 every year, just for updated rosters! I've also noticed every year they take away a feature and replaces it with a feature they took away the year before, and claim it's been "reworked"!

A game titled simple Madden, could have came out for each current gen system, and they could have easily released a $15 DLC every year that updates rosters, and "reworkes" any features. Hell, even new gameplay mechanics could be added via DLC!

But anyway, I've ranted long enough. What do you guys think is the most overrated franchise in gaming?

Well, I'm a huge Pac-Man fan (even got the 25th Anniversary T-shirt back in 2005, with the release of Pac-Man World 3), so no way I think it's overrated.

I think Just Dance is overrated. Not by the gaming press, but by the hordes of consumers snapping it up. It's ridiculous as a game ("let's judge your dancing by how well you move one of your arms!"). People rate it so highly just because it gives them a reason to dance. Somehow, music alone, or even music videos, is not enough reason.

I said the same thing about Michael Jackson: The Experience. You could just as easily get a bunch of people together, and show some MJ videos and dance along to them. No reason to spend the $30-$60 depending on the platform.

It also recieved bad reviews on the Wii for the very same reason, it judges you based on how well your arm can flap around in a MJ like fashion.

It's all about Call of Duty. 10's everywhere for a game with a storyline that has the quality of a 1980's GI Joe episode, and multiplayer that's always broken in one way or another.

Ofaliss, I think the Kinect version of Michael Jackson: The Experience should be more sensible, like Dance Central, but yeah, the Wii version is just using Just Dance mechanics. To the guy in the Amazon.com forum who asked a reviewer if the game would teach him how to moonwalk: no. Of COURSE not. Unless the game asks you to strap the Wii remote to your foot, it will not be able to teach you any better than plain video footage of MJ himself doing it. And, man, he asked one doozy of a reviewer; that guy, upvoted ridiculously high, actually wrote, "[ I] never wanted a Wii since I figured there wasn't anything I'd want to play. I hate violent shoot 'em up, or beat 'em down type games, which seems like what most have devolved into." Yes, because the Wii is known for being all violent games. That's not yarn Kirby's flinging around; it's an intestine!

About Call of Duty, it does seem like there is a segment of the gaming audience which plays nothing but Call of Duty and has no interest in video games outside of that.

A lady once asked me while I was in a Gamestop if the Wii had primarily graphic games. I'm assuming that since she didn't see the sea of E rated content right in front of her face, she was slightly blind. I responded, in as serious of a tone as I possible could, "Yeah, there's this one fighting game that features a dinosaur eating people and shitting out polka dotted eggs, while a yellow rat scurries about headbutting a hedgehog.".

Needless to say Nintendo missed out on a sale that day, while Microsoft surely gained a future disgruntled parent sending them a strongly worded email, because her child was called a "pu**y a** noob", over XBox Live.

I'm going to have to say God of War
don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the PSP versions immensely and what I've seen of the PS3 versions looks cool enough but it realy is not THAT special

I mean Kratos is angry and because of that he runs from A to B killing everything in between, and at some point he has sex
turn Kratos in John Rambo and have him running around Vietnam killing VC and huge Sovietwarmachines with his epic knive and his crossbow and you'll have the same game ... hell change it to Xena the Warrior Princess and you'll have the same game but with more boobies

it's a great franchise but in the end it's just double dragon meets dragon's lair and at some point there's offscreen sex

and I don't think Kratos is that cool a guy either
yes he's angry and yes sticks knive in the eyes of oneeyed giants but can't he smile just once?
maybe after the one sex scene in every game he can have at least a smirk or something

Kratos is a pure white guy (by his curse) and his voice is from a black guy. Isn't that hilarious!?

xena is an old series and if you make a game from a series or movie it will mostly suck because there is no money for it left. God Of War is just plain hack and slash with cool moves and a variety of monsters and with a decent story and With some nudity. I like it that way.

yes I like it that way as well and I'm not advocating a xena game

just saying god of war is overrated it's great stuff but I don't think it's worth the grades it's been getting as there really isn't anything special going on except for the graphics

Sadly, CE on the minis program has revamped it to the point where I absolutely love it. I could never enjoy the game previously.

I think God of War's popularity comes less from its story and action elements and more from how polished a production it is. Can't say for certain, of course, but I think it's sort of the same thing as with James Cameron's Avatar: nothing you've not seen before, but executed very slickly. Sometimes, you don't have to be innovative to be impressive.

Sadly, CE on the minis program has revamped it to the point where I absolutely love it. I could never enjoy the game previously.

I would say the same about Space Invaders Extreme. I've never been a fan of the original Space Invaders, but Extreme made it into an amazing aural-visual experience. Infinity Gene also looks pretty psychedelic.

The only reason I didn't pick Halo as the most overrated franchise, was because Madden has been out longer. I hate turning on my Xbox now, because I am always greeted by something Halo related.

I did play a newer pacman on my xbox (came free) but it is just not for me.

How about listing some underrated franchises like Katamari? Everyone gotta love that!

I have the PSP Katamari game, and I really enjoyed it. It's one of those titles that you think you wouldn't enjoy, but you end up having a really good time.

The most over-rated franchises in gaming are... without a doubt, Mario and Sonic.
Sorry, but you had your day... now just die already. ;)

I was going to go with the FF games (even though I like them) for a laugh, but a lot of FF fans don't have a sense of humour... that a the fact that I don't want a hit taken out on me. :D

god of war ghost of sparta just got the award for best handheld title at the spike video game awards beating Peace Walker among others

I think that's overrated

cod is, tbh, single handedly destroying the main stream video game market. too many people that don\'t play games claim they do since they play cod. wouldn\'t be a problem , but these same people join in conversation s about gaming , and then promptly belittle anything that isn\'t CoD.

I don\'t knowwhy i didn\'t jump into thisconversation last year, but GoW is rated so highly for bringing rpg elements to the action genre, imo. A lot of people i talk to praisethe upgrade system as though it was a new, unique concept, and were actually disappointed when i drew to their attention that it was just a simple rpg system.
for myself the game is very well rounded. the story isn\'t great but keeps the action moving along nicely. still have to play 3 mind you.

Cell phone gaming has grown on me a great deal over the last year. Each new phone I\'ve gotten over the last year has become more capable than the last, my current being able to run GTA 3. But it\'s still not any near the level of quality you get from something like a Vita or 3DS.

But I digress.

The problem your speaking of confiletyf is becoming more of a widespread problem lately. Gamers have become the half raised kids you see acting out in the grocery, the ones you wish their parents would spank the sh*t out of.

The MW3 vs. BF3 thing was just flat out fucking stupid. I would usually censor such a strong word, but that\'s how stupid it was. People took to retail sites and started posting bad reviews of their \"rival\" game just to screw up the rating.

Same thing with the 3DS and soon Vita. I may not find the 3DS suited to my needs, and I\'ll tell anyone that, but I won\'t waste my time typing up fake reviews. This same thing goes for all systems.

Certain gamers have God complexes, ESPECIALLY the PC gamers. OMG, I damn near have an aneurysm every time one goes on about how great shooters are on PC\'s and how bad they are on consoles. It\'s the same damn game, with the same damn problems. PC gamers are just more accurate.

And don\'t get me started on their trump card before Crysis 2 was released. \"Blah, blah, blah... we have Crysis!\". No one gives a crap! Crysis 2 was so average at best, I didn\'t even look at Crysis twice when it hit PSN/Live Arcade.

Gamers b*tch about lack of change, and then turn right around and buy games known for not changing. Millions of them throw money at their monitors when they see Mario, CoD, Madden, etc. trailers. Then they freak the f*@ck out and rage when they see the DmC or Metal Gear Rising trailers. I may have been dumb enough to buy MW2&3 (I like Black Ops enough to except it), but I welcome new ideas with open arms.

The BS that gamers are about now is the reason this is the only forum I visit and participate in. You guys are weird and what not, but for the most part everyone has an open mind when it comes to games and systems.

i stopped caring for CoD after MW2...and now i hear some rumors of Black Ops 2... *hangs head*

O-man pretty much summed up my feelings and then some... stupid CoD and thou flying thing that shall not me mentioned...
