Vita slips in 2012 for North America and Europe

Today Kazuo Hirai, the head of the Network Services at Sony Electronics told investors that the PlayStation Vita is now scheduled for a 2012 launch in European, and North American markets. Stating that due to software, they couldn’t launch the platform in those markets within calendar 2011. This isn’t completely surprising given Jack Tretton, and other Sony executives have said there’s a chance Vita would only make it out in 1 territory this year, it is alarming given Nintendo will have both North America, and Europe for themselves at $169 with Super Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7.

I mentioned my feelings on the site. While I understand that manufacturing, and getting a good software lineup is key, it is very poor to let Nintendo command the entire market for themselves.

I had heard a few months back that the quake in Japan could have potentially pushed the date back, but I believe it was somebody here that stated Sony said otherwise. So I'm not surprised to see it be delayed by something, but I am a little disappointed.

It does give me time to set aside some extra cash for a bigger memory card though. Hopefully the number and quality of the launch titles will make up for the delay next year.

It sucks, I really wanted one. Plus Nintendo needs to learn the same lessons that the PS3 taught Sony, now they'll probably destroy Vita without learning anything.

I dont mind this at all. It will only be that much better when it does launch. Not to mention I didnt wanna drop the cash on one this Christmas.

As much as I would love to see Vita outsell the 3DS, I doubt Sony really cares if it does or doesn't. Sure they'll rub it in if it does, but I think they are comfortable with their current market share in the handheld market. Besides, as long as it still releases in Japan this year, they will likely move a good number of units anyway.

If they really want to close the gap when it releases everywhere else, rebuild Monster Hunter Portable 3rd for the Vita, release it when Vita launches and re-release it for Vita in Japan. Nintendo may have Pokemon, but Sony has the portable Monster Hunter titles.

I think you've ailed it Ofaliss. From most of the numbers I've seen the japanese market is where Sony really makes it's profits. They make actually do better by making the rest of us wait for it's release, give us all a few months to drool over the japanese gameplay videos.

Any word on what an Icon Games Vita title will be yet, rich?

excellent post, rich. I always enjoy reading industry experiences. You bring up a very strong point in that iOS have proven that all kinds of games can become very popular. Some of my favourite minis have been very simple but addictive, the kind of games that I love to play, and at only a few bucks have no qualms buying. My friends and family are always talking about whatever the newest iOS game they've been addicted to is. I hope the Vita sees the market in the smaller indie titles and really pushes this content at launch.
I love major titles as much as the next guy, but when playing handheld games I am more open to unique concepts and art styles then I am when looking at a full priced console game.

This is good and bad for me.

Bad because I really wanted a Vita at launch by this year, so it sucks I have to wait till' next year.

Good because this frees me up to get an iPod Touch 5th Gen(if one comes out) this year. Don't think I'll be getting a 3DS, even with the price drop. It has absolutely no games I want to play and none that I can even think I would want coming out any time soon.

All I knew was that I was gonna buy a new gadget this year, just wasn't sure if it was going to be a Vita or an iPod Touch.
