PSP Minis

   Okay, so far the minis program has been, well, something of a bust, at least for me. We're seeing mostly puzzle games, TD games (not all minis, but 4 since the PSPGo launched) and some basic action games.

   On the other hand, the iPhone (which the Minis or pseudo-Minis often come from) seems to have all sorts of games, which is more what I was expecting.

   I guess some of this is those games are easier to make/port (though the one really original Mini, Zombie Tycoon, seems to be pretty complex and it came out quickly).

   Anyway, what I'd personally like (and hope) to see (and think would work well in the minis format):

   Vertical shooters - Galaga, Space Invaders, Gorf, Galaxian, Phoenix, etc. These are really one of my favorite types of games, period, I still have a 2600 hooked up to my TV so I can play Phoenix and Space Invaders. (There don't seem to be any in the works)

   RPGs - this might sound too ambitious, but the iPhone has several. Some old school (like Wizardry or Bard's Tale), some action rpgs, even a Wolfentstein RPG. (One involving steampunk cats is supposedly coming next year)

   Strategy games - Non TD ones. Advance Wars clones would be nice, the iPhone also has Archon (and an updated version), even basically the DS port of Civilization Revolution ($30 on DS, $5 on iphone, boo)

   Horizontal Shooters - Not so much like the R-Type, but something more akin to the old school ones. Scramble, Super Cobra, Cosmic Avenger (my favorite on the Colecovision), Vanguard (favorite on the 2600), Looping, Choplifter, Fort Apocalypse (like Choplifter on steroids), etc. (There does seem to be one R-Type sort of shooter in the works and maybe a Chopper Command clone)

   FPSes - while the PSP is perhaps not the best for a modern FPS (where you aim up and down), the older ones like Doom or Wolfenstein would work pretty good. (None in the works?)

   Card Games - Solitaire and Canasta would be my picks. My favorite GBA cart was Ultimate Card Games and there really isn't a PSP equivalent (there is World Championship Cards, but it's awful, they just took their poker engine and stuck in other card games. How do you play canasta on a poker table? Ick). (A Texas Hold'em Game from EA is coming)

   well i think the point of the minis program was to make the psp more accessible to indie devs, so im hopeing for more original games, not just clones of old school ones,
   sure they can incorporate the basic mechanic but they will have to be different in some way.
   im hopeing we get some neon retro games,
   games that are relatively simple, but visually stunning.

   Great list Jeremy.

   Here is what I would like to see the most:

   RPG's: Like Zenonia on iPhone, and Wolfentstein RPG

   Strategy games: Like Uniwar on iPhone. Archon would be great.

   Shooters: Horizontal and vertical. Space invaders Infinity Gene would be cool.

   Puzzlers: More of the physics type variety. Ragdoll cannon is awesome. Auditorium is a good start.

   Platformers: I would love to see some cool 2D or 2.5D platformers.

   Original concepts: Obviously these are always welcome.

   Asteroids type: Duel stick shooters might be out. But a cool space shooter with controls like the original asteroids would be super cool.

   Long list but that is what I want to see.

   I would love RPG games too.

   I mean Half-Minute hero is a perfect example or inpiration for a great PSP Minis game.

   Or maybe a similar Zelda approach. 100MB limit is pretty much enough for games like this.

   Old-school games would be nice. Like individual remakes of old Atari classics like Pong, Asteroids, Pitfall. Around $1 a piece or $2-3 for a pack.

   Doom/Quake would be awesome (I can play them on my PSP but a lot of my friends can't)

   "Jelly Car" which is already a homebrew game, and iPhone game, would sell extremely well as a mini.

   A port of the InkBall PC game would be fun :) Will never happen though because it's created my Microsoft.

   I just discovered this website now, for pardon my ignorance. But... Seeing all these iphone ports... Any chance we could get an improved civilization game for psp with multiplayer ad-hoc? I'd LOVE that!!

   Unfortunately, out of all the big companies that have make iPhone games, seems like EA is the only one interested in porting them over to the PSP.

   So I don't think we'll ever see a port of the iPhone Civ. Which actually boils my blood - that was simply a port of the DS version of Civ, which I paid $30 for. On the iPhone, $5. You think minis are overpriced compared to iPhone, the iPhone gets cheap ports of of DS/PSP games. Scrabble, from EA is another example. $20 on the PSP, $4 on the iPhone. And GTA:Chinatown Wars. $40 on the PSP, I think $9.99 on the iPhone (when it comes out).

   I would definitely like G5 Entertainment to port the Super Market Mania. They have ported Stand o´food and Mahjong Artifacts 2, which both are wonderful, but the Super Market Mania is even more addictive.
   I also hope for some new pioneering concepts.

    I would love to see remakes of games from the 80's-90's era. Not just an update in graphics, but ones with new levels/puzzles. Games like Boulderdash, Rampart, Rick Dangerous, Xybots, Chips Challenge, Puzznic...etc.

    I think genres like vertical shooters, horizontal shooters or puzzles, beat 'em ups, the ones which doesn't fit in more expensive markets like UMD or PSN.

    And obviously, original and unique indie games to create new genres, add new ideas to stablished genres, etc.

    I would have developers make more:

    2D games/shooters (metroid-vania style or shmups like ikaruga and galaga)
    some card games (like solitaire, poker, ect.)
    kart racers (i like the idea of heracles racer but its not available for me yet)
    halfbrick (anything from them, their super creative)

    What I want to see most is space shooters (schmups) and music based games with cool graphics. Look to things like Rez, Every Extend Extra, and Beats for ideas there.

    The occasional action platformer in the "Contra" style would be cool to.

    anyway, I would like to see larger companies experimenting with the mini's
    A lot of things are risky on the handheld, for instance Guerilla did Killzone Liberation the way they did because they felt it would work out better that way on the psp

    I think the game was awesome on it's own but it didn't have the same feel as the original Killzone where the (first person) action was (understandably) more in your face.
    I'd like to seem them (maybe they could allow a handfull of guys to build it in their free time with all the tools the company has available) put a true FPS Killzone out there cheap just to see what works and what doesn't

    same goes for RTS and what not :D

    and I'd like to see point and click adventures!

    Agreed - I think the minis platform provides a relatively low cost opportunity for development teams to experiment with different game ideas & approaches, without requiring the increased risk/time associated with 'full' titles.
