High scores topic for The Flying Hamster!
My best so far starting from Stage 1: either 219,703 or 175,689 (no indicator in the high score table of where you started, so I'm not sure which is the one).
My best so far starting from anywhere (this is an end-of-game score): 328,502.
Farthest I've gotten on one credit starting from the beginning is somewhere into Stage 2.
Farthest I've gotten on 7 credits in Hard mode is also somewhere into Stage 2. . . .
I have already 10 credits :P

I asked Game Atelier. They said that credits just keep on accumulating (I would assume until you hit maxint). So, it's sort of good news; the bad part is that you don't flat out get free play ever. I get the feeling completing Hard mode is out of reach for me, because I don't think I'll really want to play for that long to earn enough credits. I'll just admire that goal from afar, like with Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags!' Elite mode.
At this point, I have earned 6 more credits beyond the initial 5 (i.e., 3 hours of play), and I recently discovered the entry point into Journey X, the hidden stage in the game. According to Game Atelier, the boss in Journey X is actually the [in-game personification of the] creator of the game. :) I discovered Journey X while playing Hard mode and thought that perhaps there were other hidden stages, maybe different ones in Normal, but X is in both modes and is the only hidden stage. I recently set a second-highest score for myself (over 321,000) while playing a credit from Journey 2 -> X -> 3 -> 4.
Incidentally, a while back, Game Atelier's Twitter account manager noted that he could 3CC the full game on Normal, so if anyone is shooting for an achievement, there's a target (I most certainly can't do that yet!). Also, the iOS versions' achievements actually do include 1CC Normal and 1CC Hard--both of which would probably earn you the million-point and the double million-point achievements as well.

Once you are inside the pyramid or whatever structure it is that houses the latter parts of Journey 2, stay near the bottom of the stage. Actually, it's fine to take the top path at the first branch you encounter inside that building, but after that go low and stay there. Eventually, you will see a crack in a wall facing you; shoot that crack a whole bunch of times, and it will break, letting you into a tunnel. The tunnel will go on for a little bit, with enemies and columns to shoot, before hitting a dead end, where the scrolling will stop. Then, POW, you find yourself in Journey X. Enjoy!

Ofaliss, even if you don't buy the soundtrack, the whole thing is free to stream; those aren't samples (well, unless "sample" can apply to full cuts of each piece of music). The purchase option is to have it playable offline. I'll probably buy it.
By the way, the game's official website has big news: a PC Engine port! The Japanese text on the package cover, FYI, says, "Flying Hamster is a side-scrolling shooter with a Hamster named 'Newton' as its main character." No word on whether we'll see a simultaneous TurboGrafx-16 release.
Do you mean you don\'t use continues for high-score runs, or you don\'t use continues ever? In the case of Flying Hamster, not using continues ever could mean a very, very long time (like maybe 50+ hours of gameplay) before ever seeing the ending. The [PSP version* of the] game is essentially designed with the assumption that continues will be used to progress through to the end. Not only because it allows you to start from any stage you\'ve been to before (I\'m including this under the definition of \"continue\") but also because the game doesn\'t have shields at all, only has limited-duration power-ups, and, as far as I can recall, gives no extra lives at all. Thus, in some ways, if you don\'t use continues, it\'s more arduous than classic scrolling shooters (granted, you do get 3 hits/lives per stage).
How far into the game did you get on that score, by the way?
*the iOS version of Flying Hamster is supposedly easier, so Stage Select is not available in it at all until you beat the whole game first.
Hard Mode: 196,026 - 1 credit, from the beginning, ended mid-Journey 2, without success trying to break into Journey X
Normal Mode: 500,712 - 1 credit, from the beginning, ended a minute or two into Journey 4, without trying to break into Journey X
My goals which made me start playing again: Hard Mode, pass Journey 1 on 1 credit; Normal Mode, beat Alfred's score. After finally surpassing his score on a good run, I just continued that run and then set a new goal: break 500,000. Just barely did so before running Newton smack into a group of flying onions. At this point, I have 16 credits available, or 5 more than when I started playing again yesterday.
Also, the reason the iOS version of the game (which I recently test drove) is easier is that two of the touch control options, the ones which follow your finger movement, let you move Newton quickly around the screen. So, you can evade enemy fire more easily.
