Damn. For a site filled with PSP fans, I expected more of a draw in for this event.

I was on NeoGaf (so was Takao, I think).

I watched the event from the PS Blog video stream (thanks for the link). I tried to watch it in Home as well, but the E3 Theater was only showing trailers until the press conference portion ended. :( The live streaming video in Home only began with the post-conference interviews. I'm not sure if that was the plan or if they had technical difficulties until then, but I'd been under the impression the actual press conference would be visible from Home.
I gotta say, when Kaz said "two" as the hundreds digit of the PSV price, I was a bit surprised. My thought immediately before he said anything was "For your sake, I hope it isn't a 'four' or greater." When the tens digit was revealed to be "four," I was just plain shocked. Price-matching the 3DS! Sony threw the gauntlet hard! I assumed then that the 3G model would be, say, maybe a hundred more to make up for losses on the WiFi-only model--but its price also started with "two"! Man, are they losing serious cash on this, like with the launch PS3, or is it cheaper to make than we all thought? And take note of this: Nintendo's new handheld is now a hundred dollars more than its console, while Sony's new handheld is going to be fifty dollars less than its console. Admittedly, Sony's console is twice the cost of Nintendo's (and does more).
I'm slightly worried about the 3DS now, but I guess it can still stand on Nintendo's first-party IP power, as well as the distinction of being the only portable 3D gaming device. But I think it won't dominate quite like the DS did over the PSP (outside of Japan). Of course, Nintendo hasn't had its E3 press conference yet.
Had to laugh when Jack said he wasn't going to bring up "RIIIIIIDGE RACER!" A fine example of praeteritio.

I'm not surprised. It's using off the shelf hardware, pretty much. Less R&D means cheaper cost. Yes, you see high prices for the iPod Touch, but Apple is literally making like 200-300% profit on their gizmos.
The catch is going to be the software, and sales of software.
The PSP has sold pretty well in terms of hardware, just hitting 70 million apparently (which is more than the 360 or PS3 have sold), but it doesn't sell software.
What Nintendo has going for it is software sales. People will buy Pokemon/Mario/Zelda/etc.
The only thing Sony really has in terms of IP now is Uncharted, and that is not in the same breath as Mario or something like Zelda. And it's a spin off done by a talented, but low prestige team (Sony Bend).
And while they have a lot of announced developers, the actual list of third party titles is very underwhelming. The 3DS has Resident Evil (two of them, I think?).

Even though it is only 250USD (roughly 300NZD) I think I'll be looking at around 400NZD to buy an NGP...
Posted 11 months ago # -
Yeah, we really, really, really, really luck out when it comes to currency conversions. Even though the US dollar isn't worth much, companies act like it still is.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Yeah and the same with pounds to NZD for us. People still seem to think it's 2.5 or 3 to 1. When really it's just 2 to 1.

I just hope it isn't more than a 300 for the wifi model here in Canada. Even with our dollar at par our electronics are much more expensive. Oh, I would have been trying to watch via Home, but I had to work. I'm tempted to go with the 3G model if it is going to have phone capabilites, even though I don't want to have a phone. It would be nice to have the option at a later date...
It's a shame that Legacy of Kain had such a concise story, it should have been the Zelda of Playstation (though it did total 5 games across PS1/2)

Nintendo has Mario (I'm going to use Mario as a generic term for all of Nintendo's 1st party titles) yes, but how long can Mario keep them on top?! All of Nintendo's Mario games are same sh*t, new day games.
Now that sounds harsher than what I mean it to, but it's the truth. Sure the Mario games are usually good games, but even some of Nintendo's biggest fans are complaining that they are tired of the same old Mario games.
For the first time EVER, Nintendo could loss a round in the battle for handheld supremacy, sure they've won all the other rounds, but when a zebra kills a lion with a buck to the face, you kind of forget that lions have been tearing into their a**es for centuries!
Nintendo's may still BARELY squeak by, but they are going to have to revive some of the Mario games (still using it as a generic term), their fans have been begging for.
You have 2 machines, priced the same. Now the 3DS is the kid in the locker room who's afraid to shower with the rest of the boys, because he know his short comings will be noticed!
Now people only have games to claim why Vita will fail, and they showed off some pretty damn impressive games. 3DS got the umpteenth version of Street Fighter 4, Vita gets Street Fighter x Tekken. 3DS will get Mario Kart, Vita gets Modnation with real time track customization and the ability to download PS3 user generated content. 3DS will get a Mario platformer, Vita gets LBP that not only takes advantage of all the systems features, but it will also allow you to download PS3 user generated content. 3DS will get Resident Evil, Vita gets Uncharted. 3DS future FPS's will have only have 1 nub to function, Vita will have 2 sticks. I could go on, but you get my point.
Sony collected all the middle fingers in the universe, and sent them right at Nintendo in Spirit Bomb fashion.

Check out nogamesportable.wordpress.com. That's my Vita blog, and I have literally every bit of Vita news from E3 covered. From the Bioshocks, to the Mr. Inkjets of the world, I've got a tonne of stuff there. </shameless plug>
Anyways, I was indeed partaking in the festivities over at NeoGAF, and I'd invite those interested in Gravity Daze (now Project Gravity) to look through the sizzle reel. There's a tiny bit of new footage.
Personally, my favourites games have to be LittleBigPlanet, Modnation, and Sound Shapes. I'm just a bit afraid big third parties are reluctant to support the device.

I just assumed Project Gravity meant it was a part of a grand plan for the franchise. That is the one game I pray gets released on the same day as Vita.
I think I'm the only person on the planet, who likes the new name for the system!

While I admit that Nintendo mostly has rather old IP like Mario and Co., you can't put it past them to pull out something big out of nowhere. Like Nintendogs and Brain Training, which were huge on the DS.
To me, Sony seems to be selling (based on their own games) as a PS3 Accessory. I really am not interested much in PS3 IP, like Uncharted or MNR or LBP or Hustle Kings (I can't believe they push that game). I really wish the PSV had its own games - not cartoony stuff like Gravity Days. Something blockbuster, like Uncharted, but not Uncharted.
Anyway, pretty much my favorite genres are RPGs, strategy games, and racing games. So I found Ruins to be interesting, and that Vanillaware game could be good. But other than that, I was underwhelmed. Wish they had Bethesda on board, a portable Skyrim would be amazing.

Now I'm left wondering if when the 4G version gets released, and I'm sure it will down the line, can you send in your first gen Vita and have it upgraded to support 4G? Kind of like the Motorola Xoom.
Posted 11 months ago # -
I'd say no to that.

PlayStation Vita
WiFi - $249
3G & WiFi - $299 - 3G will be provided by AT&T in the US.That's a good price. I was expecting it to be nearer $800.

@volcane
It does look like a good price... that is, until they relese it over here in the UK and simply change the $ sign to a £ sign. :(

Here is a nice little preview of LittleBigPlanet (PS Vita).
Posted 11 months ago # -
When was the title changed to "Project: Gravity"? I hadn't heard about that at all until now. EDIT: Wait, did you mean that the sizzle trailer was the first appearance of the new name?
The price announcement makes me think of Sony's announcement of the American launch price of the original PlayStation, when it severely undercut the Saturn's launch price: $299. There's video of that online somewhere.

UK fans. Amazon lists it at £280 (wifi+3g) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-Vita-Wi-Fi-3G/dp/B004ISLDVA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307480898&sr=8-1
As does GAMENot in my price range!!

Ofaliss, Joystiq now has a preview of Gravity (which is how their guy is calling it, at least).
Posted 11 months ago # -
Thanks a lot onmode-ky.
It's a real shame that it won't get the attention of the other launch titles, but hopefully it'll be good enough, and sell well enough, to get a sequal or two.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Identity, will the wifi model not be reasonable if it's 280 pounds for the 3g?
Posted 11 months ago # -
To help put the cost into perspective, an unlocked Xperia Play will currently cost you £532 on Amazon UK.
Posted 11 months ago # -
@ confluletlyf
I couldnt find any price indicator for the non 3g one, but to put my comment "not in my price range" into perspective, nothings really in my price range! Probably should have stated that! I'll have to wait for a year or so reductions.
@ volcane
Yeah I see what you mean, the original set price is often not the final one, but I think an early reflection on what they want to set! How much is a Xperia Play cost as I have no idea

To help justify different pricing in America and Europe:
1/ In America, displayed prices exclude sales tax. When you check out, you'll be asked to pay around 7% (more or less, as it depends on each state) in addition to the displayed price of your articles. By contrast, European displayed prices are required by law to include the value-added tax, which in most European countries is as high as 20%. In Europe, the price displayed is the price you pay.
One may find that 20% is too much, but then governments are to blame, not manufacturers. And whether 20% VAT is too much depends on what benefits citizen get in return, but that's another debate...
2/ In the whole supply and manufacturing chain, prices are negotiated and set in US$, therefore it is possible to set a tight consumer price in US$ that can stay stable over time, regardless of the fluctuation of other currencies.
The Euro is presently high (over 1.40 US$), but it hasn't always been the case historically, and there's no guarantee that it will remain that way in the two years to come. Manufacturers must setup some additional margin to provide for currency fluctuations (or have a dynamic pricing policy in Euro, but this would be harder to manage and less legible for consumers).
