I dont think we should have to pay ANYTHING for this. Why cant we just have what we have already payed for at no cost? Makes me a little mad.

that's why i'm quite disappointed with the Vita's UMD-less feature, well that's just me,i do like collecting game cartridges XD... but anyway, i think it still depends on how much should we pay for... from siliconera, there's a list of prices for the discounted UMD-released psp games...
i quote...
"Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 – 500 yen
Gran Turismo – 1,000 yen
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable – 1,500 yen"
(from Siliconera)*some were 740 yen and 400 yen
i have no idea in US dollars, but the idea of changing price between games, makes it a little awkward... like, i bought all my games, and then i'll rebuy them (for vita) depending how expensive was the game when it was first released, or how good the game was... seems irrational for me, they should all be in equal prices...

Well its better than Sony going, "bleep you!" And not giving us anything.

Yea, but I still dont like it. Would anyone actually lose money by giving us the game for free if we already bought it? I mean, didnt they make their money when we first purchased it? It would just be a digital copy. I'm getting more and more mad thinking about it. I only own like 4 UMDs, but its the point ya know?

The only UMDs I own that I don't have the downloaded version for already, are games that aren't available on PSN, so this is useless to me. I'm not too worried about it though.
I only care about 1 thing at this point, Vita games. And GTA V.

I hope EU and US will follow SCEJ and provide this program and I agree that some of the prices do sound a bit over the top (1,500 = ~20 USD). I do think that a fee is still needed to support the program and cover bandwidth and maybe a small premium since we get to keep our UMDs and get a digital copy.
As Ofaliss pointer out though, there are a lot of games missing from the PS Store and unfortunately Sony doesn't seem to be pressuring publishers to release their old games on the PS Store. Coupled with the fact that only a few titles on the store are supported by the program makes it seem less impressive.
Also why are they able to do this now? If UMDs can be uniquely identified why did they hold this back for so long and not give us this option when the PSPgo was released? Apart from initial release Sony haven't shown much interest in supporting the PSPgo. :(

I think it would be best if there was a set price regardless of how many or what games you wanted to transfer e.g. you pay something like £10/$15/whatever yen (probably more I guess) to actually download the transfer program then once the UMDs are registered, they are added to your account for "free".
Also, will this work for people who have a regular PSP and a PSP Go? I would imagine so, seeing as it probably just adds the games to your account. Or possibly if you could register your existing UMDs, get them on your account, download them on your regular PSP, then sell your UMDs for more than or equal to the discounted download price. Hmm...that'd be good.
Finally: I wonder if it will let you register imported games? For example, I have a US PSP with some US games and some EU games. I wonder if it would let me register them all? Not that it really matters for me I guess, I probably won't get a Vita...but if we could register the games and download them on the PSP I may consider it.

@SifJar
It might be a Vita download version only. Like how you can't download PS3 things onto your PSP (for obvious reasons!)Posted 6 months ago # -
...I'm confused as to how this is going to work. What's to stop people from doing this and then sharing the UMD copy? It will still play on other psps, and when you register the game will that stop it from being sold and registered by someone else?
I don't think the fee per game is a bad plan though, at least not from a business standpoint.. It makes sense, as otherwise the used game market (which I purchase regularly) could bloat the digital downloads and hurt game sales. Sounds like a decent compromise to me.

@Balrog: I have seen now on other sites that the downloads will also work with the PSP and PSP Go.
@confuletlyf: Apparently each UMD can be registered only once. You can still resell the UMD afterwards, but the next person won't be able to register it. It is unclear how this is done, but it could log the serial numbers of registered copies (don't see how else they could do it, UMDs can't be written to by the PSP). So if you were to buy used, you quite possibly wouldn't be able to register. But if someone doesn't care about getting the digital download, you could register your UMD and then sell to them and you can both get a reasonably good deal out of it.

It's impossible for Sony to individualize UMDs, so that whole "You can only use a UMD once!" thing is likely more so a deterrent against using the same one multiple times, rather than actually being a fact.

I wonder if I ought to invest in a second PSP during Black Friday as a backup in case my trusty 2000 ever stops working, given the number of UMDs I have that don't exist on the PS Store.

I really wish they just had an add-on. I have something like 50 UMDs, so at $5-15 a pop, ouch.
In all honesty, I think $5-15 is what these games should be costing now on PSN. Look at Steam, you can often get 2-3 year old games on sale for under $5 each, or GOTY editions for $7.50.

@jeremyR That'll never happen because of retailers. When sony sold warhawk (I think) for less digitally Gamestop threatened to stop stocking PS3s and the games. In Japan games are cheaper digitally than retail because nobody cares about digital games in japan. People have to choose Physical or cheaper digital titles, we can't have both unfortanetly.
It's funny how when the PSPGO came out people were begging for this and saying they'd pay a fee. Now everyones mad. I'm glad I've never bought a umd though.

People complain so much when things start to change that companies end up back tracking to please people, then they end up stuck in this weird spot of progress and regression. I find that to be extremely irritating at times.
Alot of people seem to be thinking they are entitled to something for nothing. You don't get to go to Walmart and grab a copy of Dissida and walk out without paying, because you purchased the download. So why should you get a download of Dissida without paying for it, because you purchased the UMD?
It's a fair compromise. One that they don't have to do. Just like Nintendo didn't have to to give people who purchased a 3DS before the price drop free downloads.

I see what you're saying O, but for me its the fact that the UMD is a physical item and the digital copy is intangible. I understand I cant have a free UMD for buying digital, but if I buy UMD I want the digital copy also. I guess I'm thinking that it doesnt cost the developers anything to sell digital copies. If I'm wrong, I apologize for bitching. You know, most DVDs nowadays come with a digital copy. Is that much different?

maybe cause it's cheaper to make DVDs and that they tend to sell better... who knows??? i'm keeping my 3000, using Vita for P4G, other Vita games, all my PSN/PSV compatable DLs, and PS2 Classics.
like Jeremy, i have 50+ UMDs so this doesn't really help me much. 3000, you're getting much usage.
