PSP Remaster Series Announced for PS3

As Andriasang reports, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced a new series of Blu-Ray releases. This series will attempt to bring PSP favourite titles to the PS3 with enhanced HD visuals, expanded content, Dual Shock 3 compatibility, cross compatible saves (from PSP to PS3, and vice versa), and 3D display connectivity. This series of games will be compatible with the Ad-Hoc Party application for PS3 which allows PSP owners to play previously local-multiplayer only games online. The first of these titles set to be released is the immensely popular Monster Hunter Portable 3rd under a new name of Monster Hunter Portable HD. As of this writing an announcement for this series outside of Japan has not occurred, nor has any comment on trophy compatibility been made.

Good chance to get some of those late PSP games that never had a shot at any English localization? I sure hope so. Though part of me anguishes at the fact this is just basically asking for port beggers to have a field day...

Minis are no longer PSP only, which is what the program was designed for, now the titles that make the PSP worth having will no longer be exclusive to the system?

This almost breaks my heart to hear. The PSP never had it's own identity, and it never will. Instead of being known as the first handheld to hold it's own against Nintendo, it's going to be remembered as the pocket PS2, that people hacked the holy hell out of, whos games can be played on the PS3. You've wronged your baby for 6 years, and you can't even let the few system sellers it has stay exclusive?!

To me, that's another reason to stay away from the NGP. Sony won't give it a life of it's own, it's going to be the pocket PS3 that people will hack the holy hell out of, whos games will be playable on the future PS4.

Yeah, if they were going to do this they should've done this at least after the NGP was released. They're not even allowing the PSP to die naturally, they're forcing it into a grave, and shoveling dirt on it at this point. Which is amazingly bad given it was on its last days anyway...

It seems like the people at Sony would be smart. Really smart. Or are they too smart, and dont really care about people like us? I love the PSP and wish it could have had a regular life.

I personally don't mind. I don't think people bought PSP because of it's games they bought it because it was portable. That was the main selling point for me at least.

I, er, thought this was a good idea. Keep in mind that there won't be a huge number of titles in this product line, since it's not like it would be super-cheap to make HD versions of any game (if it were, maybe I'd have my Xenosaga HD collection already, gosh darn it!). So, it would not be every really good PSP game ending up on the PS3. But . . . it sure would be nice to see Valkyria Chronicles II and III on the PS3.

Incidentally, maybe this is not designed so much to mark the end of the PSP's life as it is to increase PS3 sales in Japan nearer to PSP levels. After all, the PSP and DS crush all other video game systems in sales in Japan; they regularly outsell the PS3 and Wii by a significant margin, I think routinely more than 2 to 1.

P.S. I'd go for PSP ports of Xenosaga as well. :) *sigh*

The PS3 will never catch up to the PSP in Japan. The PSP will likely end up just north or south of 20 million units. The PS3 will be lucky to crack 10-12.

Not a whole lot of info on what titles may be getting HD'd so I really can't say much.
I wont be losing any sleep on what this means to the PSP's identity though. I can't play PS3 on the can.

Like I said over on Neogaf, I really think Sony just should have polished up the PSP emulator that runs the Minis, getting it to work better.

That way PSP games would work on the PSP, PS3, and NGP. You'd only have to buy one, PSP games in Japan might get localized (if they do now, it will likely just by the HD stuff, not the PSP versions).

And a well done emulator can really improve the looks of 3d games. 2D not so much, but it's not like 2d games in this line would have all new artwork made.

Maybe it's just not up to snuff (having never seen it). But that seems like it wouldn't have.

And my fear is that no one will buy the NGP, because everyone will figure (and probably be correct) that sometime down the road, there will be NGP remasters for the PS3 (or PS4).

this will be the Awesome-O if these remastered titles work on NGP (the multiplayer aspect mostly) but if they don't it's just another one of sony's great idea's that just doesn't quite work when it materializes

and I think it should've been announced at next years E3
then it would've felt like fanservice to the loyal PSP customers instead of a stab in the back

I think it's actually a smart move. They want to discourage any late purchases of the PSP since it's sounding like the NGP will be released next year. Anyone who's waited this long to buy a psp will definitely not be too quick to turn around a buy another handheld.

I wasn't trying to imply there was any reasonable chance the PS3 would catch up with the PSP in lifetime sales in Japan. All I meant was that they were probably hoping to increase the PS3's weekly sales numbers, using the PSP's higher popularity to do so.

sp3c, the fact that the 3DS just launched is actually a very strong reason to push media attention away from the psp. By remastering these games, Sony stands to improve popular opinion on the content offered not just on the psp, but on their handheld games. Sony doesn't stand a chance putting the psp up against the 3DS (the only strong point of the 3ds is it is dual analog, the resolution is still very poor, 3d is just a gimmick)

These titles are also likely to be DL only. If they make them supported on the NGP, it will be a big boon at the new handhelds launch. Why play just your current dl when you can play updated versions of your favourite UMDs as well. Also, these titles have probably been in development for a while. Sony needs to release these before they are pushing any new handheld media, otherwise risk bad press on the quality of NGP games.

wheter it has a chance or not doesn't really matter, PSP IS up against 3DS right now, even outselling it in Japan from time to time ... use it, give big N a good run for it's money

I'm not saying Sony should go on a full on offensive but they need to do more then promise the delicious 3 star gourmet meals in a year or so to keep the existing and hungry userbase on their side of the force

pushing media attention away from the PSP crowd feels like a stab in the back to me, I've had various versions since launch and I do not like being ignored

I also disagree on the bad press, these are solid grade A videogames that I would play on PS3 just the way they are right now (not at full price though) but that really depends on the lineup I suppose, if it's as bad as the 3DS lineup then I wouldn't have these titles available just yet but if it's good or even reasonable it will just be an extra plusside to the machine

you don't want the last generation leading the charge but a little extra experiance within the ranks doesn't hurt either :)
