I've been looking at this since the demo came out. not amazing, but deffinitely fun. (btw, if you play through the demo you unlock a weapon to start with, it was in the store in the demo, so not a huge advantage but deffinitely save you some of that always important early game cash)

I would vote meh if it was an option. It was an alright game. I liked the battle system, but the story was slow to get going and the whole game was too easy. It's a good game to play just to relax for a bit.

how long did it last jon? I usually ask people how much the game was worth. So a $40 game was meh, but if it had been $25 it would have been great. I'm big into used/greatest hits games.
pspgamer, I don't think many people have actually played this. Most of the reviews I found on gamefaqs are just comparisons between this and previous titles. Apparently it's a rehash. So maybe a better question would be how much do you think it was worth?

@Jon
what other psp RPG's do you like?
What's for you a great RPG on psp?Posted 8 years ago # -
Apparently it's a rehash.
If by "rehash" you mean "remake," then yes. This is supposedly the definitive version of Lunar, originally a Sega CD game and later remade for the Saturn and PS1. I think the game in several of these early forms is on some people's Holy Grail lists, so this PSP release brings down the price for those who just want to play the game rather than get it as an investment.
I own the PSP release, but I've only played a couple of hours of it or so before putting it back into the backlog. The soundtrack CD is a nice bonus, as with all of XSEED's recent PSP releases.

I plan on checking this out if I can find it used. Are there any good rpgs on psp? I dled FFVII because I couldn't find anything else. I might have to pick up FFVIII next. The only one that looks worthwhile is this and Brave Story, but I can't find either.

Brave Story is a pretty decent RPG. I downloaded it from the PlayStation Store about a year ago. I never beat it though, that's just because I rarely beat any RPG! I make it a point to find all I can and do all I can before I beat the game, and I end up getting wrapped up in playing something else.

Brave Story new traveler to give it its full title is a highly enjoyable rpg. The game looks and feels a little childish at first glance... but look beyond that and you get an entertaining and visualy stunning game.
Played it
Completed it
Loved it. ;)Posted 8 years ago # -
Falcom publishes a tonne of quality RPGS on the PSP (Trails in the Sky, Gurumin, Ys, etc.). Check them out!

Are there any good rpgs on psp?
I've read comments on the Internet to the effect that the PSP's RPG library is the reason to get the system, so I'd say yes. :) I guess those people don't know about the arcade collections, scrolling shooters, or multiplayer hunting games that pervade the library.
In addition to the above, look into: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Star Ocean 1 and 2, Hexyz Force, Crimson Gem Saga, maybe the earlier Legend of Heroes games in addition to Takao's LoH: Trails in the Sky. On the tactical side, there's always Disgaea 1 and 2, Jeanne D'Arc, and Valkyria Chronicles II, as well as Idea Factory titles I've not played myself, such as Blazing Souls Accelate (not a typo) and the Generation of Chaos games.

I thought Valkyrie Profile was terrible. I have Star Ocean but didn't enjoy it. Crimson Gem and Hexyz Force looked like turned based strategy games, not an RPG. One of the Ys games did look good, but is there much customization? I didn't see anything about equipment or abilities, looked more like a weak action title.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Hmm, maybe I just have broad taste in RPGs. I think the only ones I have ever played that I truly did not enjoy are Dragon Warrior (i.e., the original US version of Dragon Quest) and Blade Dancer.
Hexyz Force is definitely not a strategy game, assuming you're talking tactical RPG, like Jeanne D'Arc. It's been a while since I last played it, but I recall it having visible enemies in the dungeons, with battles starting if they came in contact with you.
I don't know how much customization is available in Ys Seven, which is the most modern Ys game. I didn't get that far into it before getting sidetracked by the old-school Ys I & II Chronicles (there is almost no customization in these two, outside of upgrading sword/shield/armor and swapping attribute-granting rings). As for whether the Ys games are weak or strong, all I know is that I've found them addictive. ;)

It is your typical JRPG, but I really enjoyed it. If you can get it for $20 or less, you will be happy with it.
I have more about it here:
Lunar ReviewPosted 8 years ago # -
so that makes 4 pieces of equipment in Ys I&II? that would be better than most have been lately. I'm just tired of so many games touting 'rpg elements' and all the bonuses and abilities might as well be story tied since everything is so rigid.
The Ys I was looking at is one before 7. Oath in Felghana? It still had the jump function.Nice mini review steve. sounds fairly solid. Why do so few rpgs have animated weapons anymore? The old school FF titles had different graphics depending on your sword, and yet I rarely see games with more than a few different on screen graphics. Usually 3 different styles of swords. Does anyone know of a dungeon crawler type game for psp? I have dungeon siege and most of your gear displays on your character (though the graphics are fairly poor)

I love dungeon crawlers. I wish Torch Light was on PSP. Sadly, I dont know of any.
Posted 8 years ago # -
you should deff'ly check out dungeon siege then chaos. it's pretty good and actually challenging. almost full price used though.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Thx for the heads up on that game. I'll check out some reviews.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Dungeon crawlers?... what about the following:
Dungeon Explorer: warriors of the ancient arts
Untold Legends: the warriors code
Untold Legends: brotherhood of the blade
Dungeon Maker
Dungeon Maker II: hunting groundThere are a few more which I can't remember at the moment. ;)
Posted 8 years ago # -
... I suppose I'm just very picky when it comes to dungeon crawlers. I need tons of equipment and plenty of upgrades. I haven't played the psp Untold Legends games, but on PS2 it was ok. No equipment or anything though. I thought the Dungeon Maker games looked a bit too repetitive. Do you do anything other than random battles?
I got Warriors of the Lost Empire when it came on sale on PSN. It's ok but the lack of in game manuals made it a little too confusing. All you really get for gear was a weapon/shield, or dualwield/2handed weapon. 2 rings but you only find a few in the whole game.
Maybe I'm just too picky when it comes to RPGs.Posted 8 years ago # -
Isn't Cladun a dungeon crawler? The title is short for "classic dungeon." Also, I think ZHP is supposed to be filled with customization options for your character.

The Ys I was looking at is one before 7. Oath in Felghana? It still had the jump function.Yes, 4 pieces of equipment in Ys I and, I think, another one in Ys II (I've forgotten what's mapped to the L button), but most of these slots (sword/armor/shield) are "linear"; each successive piece of equipment that becomes available for those slots is better in every respect than its predecessor, so you're not "customizing" anything. The rings, though, give different abilities and so should be swapped around as needed during gameplay.
I think Oath in Felghana was released after Ys Seven, or at least the PSP version of Oath (Ys Seven is PSP-native), but it's an extensive remake of Ys III, so . . . I don't know where I'm going with that. I didn't get too far into Oath, definitely not enough to mess around with equipment. The only impression I can give for comparison is that it definitely has more voice in it than Seven.

on topic: ordered the game from cdwow. Cheap.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Off topic, sorry.
I read a kick ass review for dungeon siege and I need it NOW!Yea I would call Cladun a dungeon crawler, but I mean games more like Diablo or Torch Light. By the way, is Cladun any good?
Posted 8 years ago # -
read reviews about it and there is coming a sequel. I got dungeon siege and it has some bugs and glitches so your psp will get freezed a lot. So SAVE A LOT!!!
Posted 8 years ago # -
@ChaosRandom
You should try Bounty Hounds, now that's one awesome action RPG with a ton of equipment to collect... it's not technicly a dungeon crawler per say... but it plays like one.
P.S. sorry pspgamer01 for hijacking your thread. ;)
Posted 8 years ago # -
By the way, is Cladun any good?
I have no experience with it, so I can't say, but Hellboy liked it a lot, as I recall. Figuratively speaking, I think he was frothing at the mouth about that game.
pspgamer01, so . . . you just bought a Japanese game?
Posted 8 years ago # -
I like games from japan but not games in japanese. I love jrpg's. You should check out my psp gamecollection on my youtube channel.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Ooooh, okay! I thought it odd earlier in the other thread, when I thought you were saying you didn't like games from Japan. It didn't seem to match with things you had said before that elsewhere in the forum. I'm all straightened out now.

If anyone out there has been thinking about getting Brave Story: New Traveler from the PS Store, you'd better do it within the next few days. XSEED Games reported yesterday on their Twitter account that their PSN license for the game is expiring soon, meaning the game will be taken down from the Store. They couldn't give an exact date, but it's days away, so don't delay.
Posted 8 years ago # -
... I'll take my chances and keep looking for a UMD release. Thanks for the info though Onmode!!!
XSeed is still supposed to be publishing other titles, are they not? Did they not own Brave Story?
