Here is an interesting list of 20 top tear-jerking video games, as voted by Famitsu readers. I\'ve played a few of the games in the list but have not finished any of them, so I\'ve never seen the parts that might make one cry. Incidentally, if you don\'t recognize a title in the list at all, chances are it\'s a visual novel.

There\'s a notable paucity of pre-2000 games, and a complete lack of games produced outside of Japan (not really surprising, considering the market\'s tastes). Can anyone here name some emotional pre-2000 or Western titles?

Crying because the NES control pads hurt your hands doesn\'t count. Neither does having your Robotron 2084 high score wiped from the cabinet because someone tripped on the power cord.

I haven\'t finished The Longest Journey. Does that do it? Flower is certainly emotional, but I don\'t think it\'s likely to make one cry.

Although I\'ve never actually cried, I\'ve gotten very teary-eyed several times with all the games I\'ve played in that list so I agree with with those. Surprised none of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are in there though. Both games are very emotional. I didn\'t cry at the Crisis Core ending, but everything leading up to it was excellent, the way they handled it.

As for western games, I don\'t think I\'ve ever had any emotional attachment to any. The Longest Journey didn\'t make me cry/emotional at all.

As for games before 2000, I can\'t really think of any sad games. There\'s a scene in FFVI that is sad but I didn\'t get choked up over it.

Update: Okay I asked a friend if there was any Western games that was emotional and he mentioned Bastion, Braid Machinarium and Portal 2. I haven\'t played any of them.

I\'ve experienced the entirety of some of the games listed there & can definitely see where they might make someone cry. To be specific, both the mgs games had some very emotional scenes in them. For myself, I would have to say that Rhythm Tengoku did the job nicely. I was quite moved by the final minigame in the second stage; the music was so awesome I couldn\'t believe it was coming from a gba game. Looking up the lyrics to that song just drove the nail home for some reason. It was like \"Oh, that\'s what it means. That\'s so awesome!\" If anyone wants to look it up, I think it was called Za Bonodori, or \"The Bond Dance\" in English. Can\'t name anything pre 2000 or western that could have done that though.

Shadow of Colossus made the list, as well as FFIX. Both titles made me feel like Billy Beane/Brad Pitt in the Moneyball ending scene. Love that movie, Brad Pitt should\\\'ve won the Oscars. For reference (SPOILER ALERTZZZ!),

The voters seem to be relatively young (around my age), with the exception of FFVII, all of the games were released last decade. There are no SNES classics, hello Tales of Destiny. Also, no Fallout, and Max Payne. God, Max Payne is ridiculously painful for a game, story-wise. Seems like Fallout and Max Payne are too \"Western\" for Japanese gamers.

Admittedly, I cried playing FFX. When, FINALLY, I f*cking won Tidus\\\' ultimate weapon after a MONTH of trial and error. The hell with that Chocobo race. And the birds.

Jasper, I hear you on your last paragraph. Dodger Chocobo is one of the absolute worst things to happen to gaming. Made me want to toss my PS2 out the window.

Yes, Freelance, the emotions I had was probably the closest thing to what a person feels after winning the lottery.

Pffffffffft! After a couple of fails I said screw you, your chocobo, and your weapon, then gave up on it.

How much do you want to bet that getting all the Celestial Weapons will be a trophy to get in the Vita/PS3 re-release!?

Another Platinum I\'ll never have.

Another pain in my butt was X-2\'s tower calibrations. After the millionth failure I said, screw you, your towers, and your 100% completion!

In my first runthrough, I went straight down to the end. It was fun because my party was underpowered and under-equipped. I just pump away with Yuna\'s Summons and Lulu\'s spells. I didn\'t even know Celestial weapons exist. What am I then, 12? I just want to jump to the next FMV. lolz.

In my second walkthrough, I had the International version of FFX. So I gathered Gamefaqs strategy guides and aimed for 100% completion. But then again, real life happened.

I don\'t have any of this gen\\\'s consoles (unless you consider the PSP as current-gen), so I don\'t know everything about trophies, hence I couldn\'t chime in my opinion.

the only thing trophies can do to you is make you obsessed with getting them all, i for one dont care much since the game is meant to be played and have fun with, not tear out the hair. and i get you Jasper on the chocobo race, at least it only took me a few hours to get Tidus celestial weapon and Sun sigil.

on another note, i somehow dodged 981 bolts when the requirement for Venus sigil was 200 dodge, think i went a little overboard.. :P

I haven\'t actually played any games that have made me tear up but I guess the closest one would\'ve been Peace Walker.

Ofaliss, I honestly had no feeling of deja vu when I started this topic. Can\'t explain that. The weird thing is that the article I linked was published just a few days ago.

I\'m still interested in finding more pre-2000 and Western candidates for the topic, though.

Hell, it wasn\'t until after I got here and started recognizing names on the list, that I realized I had created the same thread months ago!

Back then it was a way to get people active in the forums. It\'s really getting dead around here. So it wasn\'t a thread that stuck with me as a favorite of mine that I created.

Rockstar has been putting alot more emotion in their games as of late. GTA IV had two endings that choked you up, no matter which one you got. Choose would be a better way of putting it.

Red Dead Redemption had a very sad moment towards its end that left me teary eyed. RDR\'s multiplayer may be boring as all hell, but it had a helluva campaign that I recommend everyone plays through. The ending didn\'t measure up to the rest of the story, but how you get there is Oscar worthy.
