Hmm, I guess you're right. I was mostly thinking of things like Suikoden Tierkreis, Shining Force Feather, and Phantasy Star 0, but come to think of it, having not played any of those, I don't know if they play anything like their earlier generations' counterparts.

I don't know how badly Atari's "remake" of the Atari 8-bit computer line's Star Raiders did on the Xbox 360, but it seems to have been a bomb on the PS3. The demo for the game allows you to view the leaderboards. The first level of the game has only a little over 1200 entries on its leaderboard. Maybe a HUGE number of buyers never played the game online, but I think that would be improbable. The game's been out for over a year, too. Perhaps even more appalling, the second level of the game has a bit under 700 entries on the leaderboard. It sounds like almost half of all the players didn't play the game beyond the first level. . . . The tenth and final level's leaderboard, as well as the full-game leaderboard, has less than 70 entries. Folks, this is pretty sad. And that sales figure would be terrible even among Minis.

Anyone game for checking the Xbox 360 version's demo to take a look at the leaderboards? By the way, if you haven't figured it out, I'm not actually recommending this game. The demo is underwhelming.

I didn't even like Star Raiders when I was a kid. I was more of a Starmaster fan (earned the patch for it), though I also preferred Stellar Track, which was a non-arcade version of those old Trek games.

I really miss those old Trek games. That and rollerdisco.

I hadn't been paying attention to this, but they just released a gameplay video of Sleeping Dogs, which is a GTA style game set in Hong Kong.

Looks pretty good. Fun. Of course, I always stink at the missions in this type of game.

I'm going to wait for reviews on Sleeping Dogs. I've been keeping my eye on it, but I have my doubts. Which should go without saying since I haven't promoted the heck out of it here, like I usually do!

If it does get good reviews, I'll go buy it first chance I get.

That's a title that has been out for years on the Asia-region PS Store. I recall watching the trailer a long time ago and thinking it wasn't my kind of game, so no for me.

I have been looking at the ys games and the final fantasy ones, but i cannot decide.

Ys and Final Fantasy games play very differently. The Ys titles are real-time, in-the-field combat, while most Final Fantasy titles have been about menu-based, separate-from-the-field combat. Most Ys games have you playing as just Adol (Ys Seven was the first one where you could swap to other characters), while the FF titles are party-based. It really depends on what you're in the mood for. So: get both. :)

The real ending, the games conclusion, has to be purchased.

At the AtariAge forum recently, a guy beat Asura's Wrath and wrote of "getting the full ending (after the 5 S-Rank mission)." Is it not the real ending, what he's talking about?

If anyone was interested, the The Walking Dead light gun game is now out in Toys 'R Us stores.

That's True Episode 18. It's Episode 18 only with a different conclusion, the "true" conclusion to Episode 18. Notice I said Episode 18 conclusion. He won't beat Asura's Wrath without forking over the money to do so.

Actually, I've always had a phobia about elevators (blame the 2nd Omen movie for that), so yes, I'm also a fan of stairs.

Anyway, anyone got a suggestion for a decent F2P MMORPG? I'm getting sick of LOTRO again. I've tried EQ2, Atlantica, Sword of the New World, Runes of Magic, and City of Heroes. Also Star Trek Online, which I like, but keep getting disconnected.

I'm just looking for the size of the leaderboard, how many players it has for its first level. As a secondary objective, how many players are on the second level's leaderboard, to see how bad the attrition is. With the PS3 version, the second level's leaderboard was almost only half the size of the first level's.

Thanks, Ofaliss. Man, so it appears the new Star Raider had less than 6000 sales across both consoles. Interestingly enough, the ratio of 1A players to 2A players is very close between the two platforms; barely over half of the playing population stuck with the game beyond that first mission. The Steam version of the game appears to have a lot of controls complaints, so the ratio might be even worse there.

iebo98, enjoy FF2. It gets a bad rap sometimes for its unorthodox leveling system, but I liked what I played of it.

Does anyone else have echoshift? I picked it up again recently, having only played through Courses A and B earlier (25% of the overall game). Course C has some seriously hard puzzles, though; for the first time in a good while, I had to look online for a solution, for C4 Key mode. Ten seconds into the video I found, the solution hit me with the usual "Oh, why didn't I see that?" reaction (it was sort of a combo/extension of ideas I'd had that didn't work). I'm currently stuck on C6 Key and may have to view someone's video for that as well. :( My best solution misses the exit by about 1 second (edit: I watched a video and discovered that my solution was actually correct--to shorten the time to the exit, I should have just had my guy auto-return to the start position rather than walk the whole way to the exit)! There aren't many echoshift solution videos on YouTube, so maybe these are the two hardest in the game?

Incidentally, I've beaten Mercury Hg now. Final leaderboard rank was in the 800s, which is pretty good, considering I didn't get either of the download packs (which double the number of levels). Out of people who only have the base game, I'd wager I made it into the top 100 or so.

This isn't a recommendation so much as a heads-up: there is a Kickstarter campaign for a new game in the Giana Sisters series. If you're unfamiliar with Giana like I was, it was a Super Mario clone for home computers back in the day. This new game looks remarkably good--visually, at least. I'm no good at judging platformers on gameplay.

Looks like both R-Types and R-Type Delta will disappear from the PSN this Tuesday. Wasn't planning on getting anything but The Pinball Arcade DLC this month but if these are gonna be gone, I thought of grabbing one of them. I've never been much of an R-Type fan though so which of the two is easier and/or better? All I know is that the series is pretty hard. R-Types has the advantage of having two games in one package and I do prefer the 2D graphics over the 3D in Delta but that doesn't necessary make it a better game. Any ideas, onmode-ky?

Yeah, the proposed Giana Sisters does really look slick.

Also there is a really nice looking tactical RPG on Kickstarter - Shadow Remnants.

Looks very much like a PC version of D&D Tactics (which was rather unwieldy on the PSP).

But I'm kiind of burned out on KS. I've pledged for 6 different things, which I won't be seeing for another 6 months to a year.

Just wrapped up Max Payne 3. Rockstar may have the same plot every game (someone betrayed someone, someone gets revenge), but they know how to make that sh*t awesome!

Time to get into the multiplayer.

Hehe, we've actually had a similar conversation before, but I didn't know that you never decided on getting one of the two. Honestly, I'd say you should get both--but my viewpoint is that R-Type is such a seminal, influential series in the scrolling shooter realm that every fan of the genre should get entries in it when the getting is cheap (not to mention still extant). As far as which is easier, I couldn't really tell; in both games in R-Types and in Delta, the difficulty level is pretty high. You'll die a lot and be forced to develop strategies in response. In terms of "better," Delta has some additional elements on top of the base R-Type gameplay mechanics, so it has a bit more depth in that respect.

I didn't know the two titles were being removed from the Store until you said so. Checking around, it seems that the only place where it was announced was the latest PlayStation Blogcast (I typed "Blogcats" at first, which I suppose would be Toro and Kuro, right?). It's sad that these games escaped Irem's initial pullout from PSN (namely, their disappearance from Home) but are now being removed one year later. :(

Sadly I don't think I can get both. I already bought a sub for theHunter for my own b-day present (that awesome hunting game I mentioned earlier) and I don't really want to up my credit card balance. Both R-Types are already $5.99 each. So both games are hard but Delta has more depth? I'm not liking the 'both are hard' bit. I may love SHMUPs but I do suck at them. Wondering if I should even get them at all. I am confused.

One thing, Wiki says Delta is the 4th game in the series, but it also says Leo is the 4th game in the series??

Maybe this will provide some perspective: I bought R-Types fully accepting that I'd probably never be able to beat either game in it. I bought R-Type Delta expecting that I might eventually beat it someday, since you earn credits as you play, but I ended up permanently stuck on a particular level--at which point I used cheat codes so that I could see the ending. It seems R-Types has cheat codes, too, but I never minded not being able to reach the ends of those games; Delta feels more immersive, so you kind of want to see what happens more, as you play. It has very good atmosphere, a rather unique one among shooters. The two R-Types games are more "arcadey" in feel.

One thing, Wiki says Delta is the 4th game in the series, but it also says Leo is the 4th game in the series??

I think the intended meaning is that Leo is the 4th released game in the series, but Delta is the 4th mainline game in the series.

I did see the cheat codes for both games so even if they are hard, I can still see the endings if I wanted to. You say Delta is more immersive? I might as well get that then. Thanks for the help.

been on a recent Ratchet and Clank frenzy...worthy game of your time...especially if you like blowing stuff up, or just turning enemies into ducks, sheeps, or chickens... handheld Ratchet games are good too...

Yeah, R-Type and R-Type II feel more like gauntlets. You play them just for the challenge. They do have great visual style and distinctive music, but I would be surprised if those became major elements of your drive to keep playing. R-Type Delta makes it feel more like a world you're exploring (while also being a serious challenge).

@ O - I take it that solar gun in MGS4 is a reference to another Konami game, Boktai. Seems kind of weird now remembering that there was a game that had solar panels on the cartridge itself that affected the gameplay in it. On the downside I bought the game when I was working a job at nights at the time, so suffice it to say I never made it too far in the game.
