It was indeed our teaser puzzle that ran last week!

Hmmm, it's hard to get a feel for it without any screenshots, though.

Anyway, that's very interesting about the music inspiring the game.

A song that always makes me think of a space shooter is the classic

Tomski - 14 Hours to Save the Earth

I'm no shooter fan, but I must admit...I'm interested. The thing is, your not really giving us much to go on. Yeah the music is catchy, but without any video, or at the very least screenshots, it makes giving the game a name difficult.

How long do we have to come up with a name? I would like to help name it, but I don't want to rush it, I at least want to see a few screenshots first.

Hiya,

There's no deadline for the name yet. I'll post here when we have a short list.

I'm sorry you are finding it difficult to think of a name - we aren't able to show screenshots yet for reasons explained on the blog, but hoped all the info, pics and music would be enough for inspiration. It doesn't seem to be a problem generally speaking, as we've had a couple of hundred suggestions so far, and some are pretty good.

Some excellent game play ideas coming through too.

I'm off line for a few days, and when I log on, I see this... GREAT, I'm glad you read my sugestion for a naming comp, I thought it was a good idea (but I didn't think anyone else would... well, except volcane, thanks man).

My name sugestion for the main character is
"BLAZE HELLFIRE"

My name sugestion for the game is
"DARK VOID"

Well good luck with the game, the artwork for the game is great. ;)

Hey thumbbandit,

Great minds think alike buddy, the artwork you commented on, the close up teaser image of the pilot, was the artwork we were working on for the 'name our game' site. We've been planning it for a good couple of months, and I cringed when GripGames ran their 'name our game girl' comp, as I was concerned we'd be seen as copying!

I guess there are many great minds here, all thinking alike :)

My entry is in. I myself like my selections enough that if FuturLab doesn't use any of them, I think I might do so myself (not for a game, though). :)

On the subject of coming up with a title without any screenshots or footage, I don't think that was a problem when Irem came up with "R-Type" (name it after the fighter craft!) or when Atari came up with "Battlezone" (name it after the setting!). :) Sometimes, the concept is all that you need. And then, of course, there are things like "Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix."

P.S. We could get Tim Langdell in a suing mood if we called it "FuturLab's Edge Game."

Ha, I did consider changing Coconut Dodge to Coconut Dedge for a moment when all the indy game companies changed the names of their games for a while earlier this year :)

It would have cost us too much though!

So, now that the cat is out of the bag on our new game, what do you all think of the direction, art, music etc?

I appreciate we're not giving much away about the game yet, but are you liking what you see so far?

Definately! The concept art has a great blend of old skool arcade imagery and a more modern minimalist Wipeout-style. In fact, visually it reminds me of Wipeout Pure on the PSP, which had fantastic clean graphics.

It's great to see all the extra background information on the FuturLab blog. I love seeing how these projects are influenced and how the final product takes shape.

No, but his quote does. Who doesn't get fortune and glory from saving the planet from aliens/whatever. Besides, Han Solo would probably say the same thing.

I think it would have been fine to name it "Mulholland Drive." Nothing confusing about that.

Han Solo would probably want several thousand credits on the side, Your Worship. He is a scruffy-looking nerf herder, after all.

And, yes, FuturLab, I like what I've seen/heard of your upcoming game. Well, I think the fighter ship looks a little squat for my tastes, but that's all. Its pilot distracts from that well enough.

I should mention that out of all the people that visited the Name Our Game site, only two people found the hidden bonus rabbit hole and followed it down :p

I found the rabbit hole, i just didnt go in it, then I forgot about it.
Thanks for reminding me, I just tried to get through it, I'm currently stuck (its incredibly awkward as I went in head first and one of the rabbits on the out side thinks I'm one of the plants he eats), can I have some help getting in or out? ;)

Geez, and I was busy scouring the site's pages and even source code, looking for a hidden user/password combo. I guess sometimes you really are supposed to ring the doorbell instead of sift through someone's trash. Go figure.

By the way, FuturLab, stop throwing recyclables into your trash bins.

Incidentally, I'd thought the indy game name changes were jokes; i.e., none of them were actually officially renamed, even for a day. No?
