Hey Ross, can we expect a combo deal for both games? Similar to what Paddy did with his games and Frima did with theirs?
Posted 6 months ago # -
I'll mention it to my boss and see what we can come up with.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Wait a minute! You're not in charge? Somebody promote this man!!! Jesus.

Good afternoon everyone,
All my American friends may be happy to know you can get your hands on Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain from today.
EU gamers are still going to have to wait until next Wednesday. Sorry 'bout that. ;)
Hope you guys enjoy. :D

I know I will! :D
Thanks for the reminder guys. ;)Posted 6 months ago # -
Added an extra $4.99 to my wallet at last funding just for this. :)

I was planning on getting the previous Fighting Fantasy game, but then this came out. Does it matter story wise which one I get first?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Nope, not in the slightest. Both have almost exactly the same rules and the stories are entirely separate (they don't even take place in the same world).
Whichever one you decide to get I hope you enjoy it. :)
Posted 6 months ago # -
Excellent! Thanks evanac, I'm gonna download one now! =D

@ChaosRandom

I got a lot of enjoyment out of the first game, and I'm really looking forward to the next one... not long to wait now. ;)
P.S. Are there any plans to produce more FF games?

I just (successfully) finished The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. :) To my surprise, it was my very first try at the game that got me to the good ending. My content completion status was 41%, I think, when I beat the game, and I\'m currently just over 50% on a second run.
In comparison to Talisman of Death, Warlock seems to have weaker enemies (i.e., less skill and stamina) in general, though possibly more of them. The game also contains a labyrinth, so you definitely need a pencil and paper handy to draw a map (meaning Talisman is much better for on-the-go gaming, at least if you\'ve reached the labyrinth in Warlock). Talisman seems to have more opportunities for sudden death; granted, I have only seen about half of Warlock\'s content but over 70% of Talisman\'s. However, in that, I never once died in Warlock but died a whole bunch of times in Talisman. Talisman, though, does have a much better story (in Warlock, it really is just \"guy goes into dungeon and maybe finds the treasure\").
LJ guys, any chance we could see the interface enhancements from Warlock added into Talisman as an update? They really helped streamline things.

@onmode-ky I\'ll talk to some people here and see what we can do. Not going to get many responses today as it was the Laughing Jackal Christmas Party last night and there are a few people who\'ve been slightly under the weather today. Free bozze tends to do that :)

Second run through the game also resulted in no death (not relying on dice for combat really makes these games more playable; thanks for the option, LJ!), though I didn\'t revisit the best ending due to exploring different pages. Completion now at 65%.
What were the rooms marked \"...GER\" and \"SM...P...LE\" on the Map Scroll supposed to be? I\'ve played through the game twice and still don\'t know what those words are (and the Web is, surprisingly, no help at all). The first one reminds me of V\'Ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, though. :)
Also, are there actually other weapons/armor that can be equipped (not including special items like the bow and arrow)? I\'ve seen 65% of the content yet have never had anything other than the basic sword and armor.
There are at least 2 cases I encountered where acquired gold was not added to the inventory gold total, by the way. It was kind of a bummer, but gold is thankfully not all that useful anyway in the game. I think the first time was when 15 gold pieces didn\'t go anywhere.
Oh, for those that haven\'t reached the end of this game before, there\'s a new graphical element here that wasn\'t in Talisman: a 3D model of a treasure chest and keys! And the chest can open! Okay, so it\'s not like LJ built you a 3D model of the dungeon, but it\'s still a nice new touch.

@onmode-ky
Hey, thanks for the info. We\'ll look into those!
Any more specific info on the gold not being added to your inventory would be appreciated, although - as you already pointed out - it\'s not used for anything meaningful and is only really there as kind of a high score-style repeat-play incentive in the original book. We only kept it in out of respect to the original, tbh.
I think the rooms are marked that way for a reason. I definitely remember those extracts from entries in the book anyhow. The backslashes and speech marks probably shouldn\'t be though! ;D
You don\'t really get equipment for use in combat as those things tend to be handled by mid-passage choices in Warlock. It kind of changed later on, but this is the first FF after all. There\'s lots of experimental stuff in there that got ditched by Steve more or less straight away once he got into the swing of things. By Book 3 the formula was more or less finalised. :)
Finally, I\'m glad you liked the treasure chest thing for the keys - the original way just didn\'t seem to cut it! :)
Cheers for now,
Al

I\'ve located one of the \"gold but no gold\" pages: 135. The text says you\'re supposed to get 18 gold pieces, but it doesn\'t happen, and the page is also not marked with a \"got gold\" icon in the log book. I\'d guess the two symptoms are linked; search for pages with the text \"gold piece\" in the log book datafile and compare against the page attributes data structure, and that might identify all the pages where gold count incrementing is being missed.
About the weapons, I just thought it kind of odd that the Items section in the log book noted \"no bonus\" for the basic equipment even though there didn\'t seem to be anything that did grant a bonus. Eh, no biggie in this game.
So, on the map scroll\'s mysterious letters, no one at LJ knows what full words they\'re supposed to hint at? Maybe one is the room with the manaGER and the other is where the SMelly PeopLE are.
Posted 5 months ago # -
The first one\'s DANGER and I did know the second but can\'t remember off hand - however your guess is surprisingly accurate to the truth of life here at LJ Towers. XD
Posted 5 months ago # -
I was going to comment that my guess didn\'t make sense, because the manaGER must surely be one of the SMelly PeopLE himself--but I wasn\'t sure if Daren might be reading. ;P
I saw a death screen for the first time, finally. Had to work to get it, though; it was kind of hard trying to get hit 4 times in a row on purpose!

search for pages with the text \"gold piece\" in the log book datafile and compare against the page attributes data structure, and that might identify all the pages where gold count incrementing is being missed.
This turns out not to be true. Page 313 has no \"got gold\" icon in its log book entry, yet it properly gives you 8 pieces of gold.
Oh, and I finally came across a weapon that gives you extra Skill. Too bad that was a run where I found an instant-death page!
Psst! Don\'t forget to backport the UI enhancements to Talisman of Death, LJ! You know you want to!
