I am curious to know what your favorite video game genre(s) is. Mine would be RPG because to me, I find it fun, mostly the ones with strategy. I also love how the stories and length of RPG are often better like my favorite, Golden Sun. Amazing story and it's so long. And Zenonia. Easily the longest mini, and to me, it has the best story in the minis program. I would say The Legend of Zelda, but the only ones I liked were A Link to the Past, Majoras Mask, and of course Ocarina of Time.

I don't know the name to my second favorite genre, but Fire Elblem, Advance Wars, History Egypt, and Mecho Wars would fall under it.

My favourite game genre is Action RPG... My favourite game of all time was, is and always will be Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, which is an Action RPG.
I think the genre title you're looking for is 'Stratagy' huicho, which also happens to be my second favourite genre too. Vandal Hearts, my second favourite game of all time. ;)

TB is right, huicho. You're a Strategy RPG man.
My favorite genre would be action games. But not any kind. I love the ones that are balls to the wall, with a lot of style (Vanquish). I also enjoy action games thattry their hand at a more slow paced style, that rely on story telling and art design (Enslaved).
My second favorite would be RPG's. I'm more of a Final Fantasy X type of guy. But I'll play games molded from the old school formula. My favorite RPG is a tie between Final Fantasy X and Resonance of Fate. Both have individually consumed 100+ hours of my life. Followed closely by Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The outline of my thumbs were tattooed onto my SP from all the hours I spent playing that game.
And finally my third favorite genre is sandbox, in the design of GTA. Sandbox titles have infinite replayability. And when they are as good as the GTA's, you won't have a problem coming back over and over.

Shoot-em-ups(of the Gradius variety) definitely, followed closely by Fighting games(2d preferably). On that note I think I'm gonna pick up Senko no Ronde as it seems like a cool mash up of both genres, and my 360 deserves more love after neglecting it for 3 years.

My tastes are pretty close to yours, huicho.
I grew up playing western RPGs - Ultima, Wizardry, The Bard's Tale, Might & Magic, Wasteland, and a host of others. My favorite company was SSI, or Strategic Simulations Inc. Pretty much all they put out was strategy games, RPGs, and occasionally sports games (like Tony LaRussa Baseball). Next up, MIcroprose, makers of X-com, Master of Magic and so forth (also a lot of flight sims, but I used to love but they seem to have gotten really hard core)
But for whatever reason, those sorts of PC games (and companies) peaked about '94 or so, then pretty much just died. I think it was a combination of factors - 3D graphics most notably, which was confused on the PC at first. And I think Windows 95 made PC gaming more accessible - before, you had to know how to write a really tight config.sys and autoexec.bat in order to get enough memory to run PC games (640k was sort of the main memory, and you needed as much of that as possible). And the popularity of Dune 2 clones like Warcraft and C&C were hugely successful, so the RTS became the dominant type of strategy game. To the point where today, even turn based games sometimes get labeled "RTS" simply because the strategy genre is so dominated by them, it's become synonymous with strategy.
Anyway, that had the effect of driving me first to consoles, where turn based strategy games and RPGs were still being made in Japan, then finally to handhelds, where they seem to have migrated from consoles.
Now it seems I'm going back to PC, with handhelds not doing so great anymore.
But my three favorite games of all time are X-com, Wasteland, and Tactics Ogre. I've actually been lucky - the PSP got that TO remake, X-com is getting a remake this year (a proper remake, not just the FPS that looked so awful) and Wasteland 2 is finally being made. And if the last two do well, they could start something.

My favorite genre is the open-world Western first person RPGs like the TES franchise (I started with Morrowind, sorry Jeremy, I've yet to play Daggerfall), Vampire: The Masquerade, Deus Ex and Fallout 3.
I also really love simulations like Sim City and Tropico.
Amazingly, for a young and virile man like me, I don't seem to like First Person Shooters ala CoD, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, Crysis and others.Posted 1 year ago # -
I'm going to post three here. My first pick would be Action/Adventure: Uncharted, Force Unleashed, LotR. Second would be Shooters. Mainly Third Person Shooters: Battlefront, Starhawk. Third would be Platformers: LBP, Old School Mario, ect.

In no particular order: pinball, scrolling shooters, and RPGs (mostly the JRPG style). I also really enjoy assorted classic arcade games, of no single genre. Big Pac-Man fan, and I like Marble Madness and its descendants a lot.
Incidentally, another often-used term for "strategy RPG" is "tactical RPG."

Looks like we got a RPG crowd here. I had a feeling this would happen.

My third favorite genre would be puzzlers. I like puzzlers like Karoshi, Tiny Hawk, Archibald's Adventures, Revoltin' Youth, ETC.

JRPG, but I enjoy action JRPG's more so than turn based. They're both good though.

I like all RPG's. My favorite are the turn based JRPG's and the Strategy. I just got myself a GBA emulator and now I am playing the Shi*t out of it. I miss Golden Sun and Fire Emblem.

I did forget to mention that I do have a weak spot for Tower Defense.

I've often stated here that I'm pretty much open-minded when it comes to gaming genres. Being a visually impaired gamer makes the pickings kinda slim sometimes, so u gotta take whatever u can get the hang of. Having said that, my first favorite genre is fighting, 2d or 3d, long as the game isn't crappy, & as long as it has a good story to motivate me. For instance, I know quite well that the Virtua Fighter series is very reputable and its fighting engine is really solid, but a lack of story relevant to the in-game characters, even with the recently included quest modes just doesn't give me enough of a reason to continue playing it for long.
Right alongside that comes the Beat Em Ups genre, so many of them from the retro age, & the more recent ones for the minis platform like Twin Blades & Wackie Land's Boss.
I also like to play RPGs, but of course, as I've mentioned earlier, I gotta work around my limitations, & that means that such a game has to be able to give me the feedback I require to play. A fan of the main Pokemon series. I also like Riviera: The Promise Land for psp, and Yggdra Union, also for psp. But I do enjoy very much sitting through another person's playthroughs of RPGs. Did that with my brother for Tales Of Grace F, & we're starting on Eternal Sonata. I remember doing that with my cousin with Final Fantasy VI when I was younger; it was an amazing game with an amazing soundtrack. And it was perfect when Square blended my 2 favorite genres together in the Dissidia series. Finally! A final Fantasy game that I could play, & I had a blast with it through & through.
Also like to play simple rhythm games like Rhythm Heaven series. In addition, classic compilations catch my favor as well, (especially if they have lots of unlockables), alongside games like Mario Party series & Wario Ware series with loads & loads of mini games. I think that's about everything.PS: The occasional sports games, but only those that cross the boundaries of fighting like UFC for Dreamcast, & a variety of arcade style boxing games.

I agree, I am very open-minded. As long as if they are good.

RPG, then everything else minus racing and sports. for racing Mario Kart is the only exception.

WOO GO RPG!!!
Now my favorites have changed (Fire Emblem and Advance Wars brought back good memories)
1. Turn based RPG
2. Strategy RPG
3. Action RPG
4. Puzzlers
5. Tower Defense
The only reason turn based RPG is number 1 is because Golden Sun fits in that genre, I think.Posted 1 year ago # -
I guess I should add a couple of genres that aren't made much anymore, but still my favorites.
Firstly, street racing games. I did way too much of this when I was younger, looking back it's a miracle I'm alive, but OTOH, it was pretty fun. So I like doing that in video games as well. Tokyo Xtreme Racer was my favorite series of these games, which survived into the 360 era at least, with Import Tuner Challenge (considering it's set in Japan, it makes no sense to call it "Import") but then the company that made it, Genki, seemed to go into a coma. They don't seem to be dead, but they don't seem to be making games any more. And while at one time, there were like half a dozen series of these games, there aren't really any anymore.
Secondly, beach volleyball games. There's just something very fascinating about it, scantily clad women jumping up and down. The first one I remember was one on the GBA, but then there was DOA: Xtreme on the Xbox, Outlaw Volleyball as well. It never really caught on though, but thankfully Tecmo ported the Xbox game to the PSP.

Man, can you imagine the possibilities of a DOA Xtreme for the Vita!? Oh that would be heaven. Three words my friend...

Open world action RPG. I don't need story, just an open world to mess with. Most action games, open world or not, with upgrade systems or leveling stats I like as well. I've always liked the idea of choosing how I would play the game instead of being told how to specifically play it, being able to upgrade specific skills adds in that depth.
Games that come to mind - Borderlands, Just Cause 2, Prototype 2, Saints Row 3, Kingdoms of Amalur.
I just love the feeling of overpowering my character, leaping off tall buildings, mountains whatever, landing in a group of bad guys and kicking their asses. That helps blow off some steam.

Have you played Deus Ex Human Revolution yet, Nexus.
I just love the feeling of overpowering my character, leaping off tall buildings, mountains whatever, landing in a group of bad guys and kicking their asses
All of that is possible in Deus Ex.

I was thinking more Dynasty/Samurai Warriors myself. ;)

I'd bring up that a 3DS rendition of the game could give you in-your-face 3D jigg--I mean, motion, but that's already available anyway from Senran Kagura.
I'm not sure why I didn't note this earlier, but in the mid-90s, I was really, really into X-Wing and TIE Fighter, which are [first-person] space combat simulators. Granted, they weren't exactly accurate to real life physics, given that turning off your engines would make you come to a stop, and lasers didn't seem to go anywhere near the speed of light, but they were a whole lot of fun. And they were the reason I got a sound card. Oh, and I set up special autoexec.bat/config.sys for each one, too (X-Wing required EMS memory).

I've played Deus Ex, for some reason I just didn't get into it. Dynasty Warriors I do like. Good mindless fun. I must have put over 300 hours into Dynasty Warriors Gundam 1-3 and the Vita version of regular DW is good as well.

:O
You, sir, are undeserving of that Rorschach avatar! >:(

Oh yeah, I used to really be in space (and flight sims).
X-Wing was pretty much a dream come true. I saw Star Wars (A New Hope) umpteen times when it came out in 1977. But I also loved the flight sims from that era - Aces of the Pacific, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Gunship 2000 and so on.
