A friend of mine once got them, and he liked seeing how the series started out... though he said that they were very tough games... for the 'Hardcore FF Fans' me thinks.

I'm not sure if you're asking "Should I buy the PSP versions of games which I have played before?" or "Should I buy FF1 & FF2 in principle?", but I'll answer the latter thus: FF1 is the only FF game I have actually finished (played it about a decade ago via NES emulator), and I enjoyed it quite a bit. This was in stark contrast to my experience playing the original Dragon Warrior (the former US name of Dragon Quest), which was so much a grindfest and so filled with fighting (there were multiple instances of finishing a battle, walking a single step, and getting into another battle) that it quickly became a chore to play for me. For a game with no story-relevant player characters (you just choose classes for 4 characters), FF1 has a fairly engaging save-the-world story. As for FF2, I played several hours into it but never finished, not because it wasn't fun but because I got sidetracked by something else and just never returned. It has a much more engaging story, but its leveling system is a little time-consuming (weapons/spell abilities level up individually, based on usage). Still, as a story-centric video game RPG, it's a pioneer, a sort of a prelude to FF4.
These days, I have the PS1 FF Origins and PSP (UMD) releases of both games, but I've never played all that much in them. However, I have heard that the PSP renditions are the definitive ones of the two titles; still, if you're asking about issues, I don't know if they have the same plagued-by-load-times issue that the PS1 releases of FF5 and FF6 had. I should note, though, that I seem to recall both PSP games having some features to make them a bit easier than the originals, features which could be turned off if you desired. So, if you don't quite want the old hardcore feel, you can turn those on.
Somewhat off topic: I realized recently that my PSP library includes remakes of the first 2 titles of several RPG series: Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Ys. On top of those, I have remakes of the first titles in a few other RPG series: Valkyrie Profile, Disgaea, Lunar. While looking over my library thus, I had the realization that disappointingly few of the titles were completely original, independent of any preexisting IP: just Jeanne D'Arc, Fading Shadows, Half-Minute Hero, Invizimals, and Hexyz Force. Everything else is licensed, a remake, a sequel, a spinoff, or a compilation. . . . On the downloadable front, things aren't so lopsided, though, thanks in no small part to Minis.

currently playing ff1 and it's not hard at all! pretty fun game for 12 euros. but i have to tell you that random encounters are a freakin' pain in the ass.

All the FF games (the older ones anyway) have annoying random encounters.
P.S. I think my friend found FF-1&2 hard because he was used to FF-7.

If you want to make FF1 very difficult for yourself, try to make it through the whole game with a party of 4 white mages (and don't class-up any of them to white wizards). Or, have 3 party members die and make it through the whole game as a lone white mage/wizard. I don't think it's possible at all to do it as a lone white mage who never classes-up, but I believe there have been people out there who have done the 4 white mages and lone white mage/wizard--though I don't know if that would require an emulator with save states to pull off. You'll surely be dying a lot!
I recently saw footage from the beginning of the "port" of Final Fantasy VII to the Famicom by an unlicensed Chinese studio. Lots of FF2 graphics and music were *ahem* appropriated into that.

I have played each game for about 2 hours and would recommend FF2 but probably not FF1.
