Is it long? Is it too childish?

I played it on the review account (though JN is doing the review) and absolutely love it.
It's not long, long, but it's not 5 minutes like MPSMP. An hour maybe to finish all the levels (I'm stuck on level 4, you can continue where you left off)
I wouldn't say it's childish, more silly and tongue in cheek. For instance, you have penguins in the Egypt level. And you can see them working on the pyramid (along with the help of a certain sea mammal which is completely ridiculous).

The Flying Hamster is done in a tongue-in-cheek Japanese style with hilarious enemies and backgrounds. However don't be fooled. This is a well-tuned & well-balanced SHMUP, crafted in love by people who clearly understand and appreciate the classic SHMUP genre. This game is a beautiful homage to the best of the classics.
The control scheme is simplicity itself (analog stick to move, X to shoot, O to auto-shoot. Sorted). The controls are crisp, precise and sharp. No sguidgy vague movement or ambigous hitboxes here.
The enemy design is thoughtful and considered. The models are hilarious (cows shooting high-velocity milk from their udders!) but look beyond the light-hearted graphics and you will clearly see that the different classes and range of offensive capabilities of the enemies are exactly what you would expect in a triple-A SHMUP.
The initial playthrough (on the default normal skill level) took me a few goes to master and it probably now takes me about 30 mins or so for an end-to-end run-through (you have unlimited continues on normal skill level). Completing the normal model unlocks the hard mode, which is the clearly the primary mode the game is designed to be played on.
When playing on hard, you no longer have the option to continue after you have used up all your 'credits' (I currently have about 9 credits, effectively giving me the option to continue 9 times once my lives are used up). Hard mode ramps up the enemy number/aggressiveness, as you would expect. It's hard (obviously) but not impossible. I haven't managed to complete hard yet - I can see that it will take me quite a while to master (I'm only an average skilled SHMUP player).
There is a high score table, so djax will be happy! ;-)
In summary:
Graphics = Georgous. Bright, cheerful & wonderful to look at.
Sound = In-keeping with the game.
Controls = Perfect.
Length = Normal mode (about 1 hr, including the learning curve). Hard mode (looooong!).
Value for money = Definitely.
Fun? = Oh yes! ;-)This game is a 9/10 for me, without question! :-)

Sorry but I don't pay 6.99 EUR for games with just 1 hour of gameplay (I am not gonna waste time on hard mode). So gonna skip this one, just like Age Of Zombies.

volcane, can the directional pad be used for control instead of the analog stick?
By the way, here is what Game Atelier themselves called "shameful advertising": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQDBJMPH880
Ha! Commercial in poor taste aside, I'm still looking forward to the game's arrival in the US.

Yes indeed, you can use the directional pad to move (instead of the analog nub). Sorry, I should have mentioned that.
That advert is hilarious! :-)

While it's true the game probably only lasts an hour (less once you've gotten good), it's the sort of game you play because it's fun, not just to beat (which seems to be an alien concept to modern gamers, sadly).
That said, I can understand balking at the price. That's like what, $12? Something like that. I'd pay $5, probably $6.99, but not $9.99 (considering there are $9.99 umd games I plan on getting).

I like the concept of a game being fun rather than extremely challenging. I just don't understand why the pricing is so high for this game. For one Euro more and I can get one of the 40 or so full PSP games categorized as "Essentials" on the SCEE PSN store. But maybe The Flying Hamster really is worth the price.

I finally purchased The Flying Hamster although I wasn't happy about the price tag (€6.99) and I must say that the game feels and looks so polished and the gameplay itself is so superb that it could easily have been a full PSP game release, imo, or am I simply trying to justify that I just spent more than five Euros for a Minis? Heheh. No seriously, I'm not sure when was the last time I've had so much fun playing a shmup. The gameplay music is also awesome and when reaching the high score board there's a nice catchy piano tune which I've come to like a lot. The Flying Hamster is already amongst my favourite Minis.

Any news on when this is hitting NA?

Game Atelier recently tweeted this: "There are good chances that the game will be released before Christmas in North America. More info very soon!" Geez, "before Christmas" is the best they can offer for a date? I'm reminded of home maintenance appointments being "sometime between 9 AM and 5 PM." At this rate, maybe the revamped Ace Armstrong will get here before The Flying Hamster.
I saw that high five, evanac and igotmy5kilo.

although we can finish the game quickly , as long as there' replay value (and fun to play) , then why not?
i bought age of zombies & alien zombie death , and they're pretty freaking good to play in short bursts!
although buying those psp essentials games may be value for money , but when i got a little time to spare , i always go for mini.

why do people keep reviving this thread since I have this game for about a month already?

If you're asking why I revived this thread, pspgamer01, I would recommend you read what I wrote when I revived the thread. It's called "news."
