not yet. The last boss is pretty difficult. If you are at the end with no shield it's difficult. Maybe later this day I will try the level again.

I found the rotating gun (the one that shoots out the lava beams) the most challanging.

yeah that's part were you mostly die.

What's considered a good Survival score when having no upgrades at all?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Donno?... my first one on this this thread was with little or no upgrades... which is why it's quite low. ;)

3,021,936 on competent, now onto insane!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Congrats man... now that's a score!
If I may offer you a piece of advice, personaly I'd stick with the competent difficulty setting, insane is just that... insane.
Also you should back up your gamesave after you complete the game... so that you can change the difficulty setting.Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks Thumbbandit, I backed up my save and dived into insane. It's not too bad if you utilize your power ups effectively. I'm already at the last boss, I'm going for 100% completion!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Good luck on the 100% completion, 3,021,936 is definetly the best score I ever heard of :). I personnaly got around 1,500,000 or so.
Be sure to post a screenshot when you get 100%, I'm eager to see that :P

I'll be sure to post a screenshot if and when I hopefully do. I'll try to get one soon of my highscore later today
Posted 2 years ago # -
I did it!!! It took a while but I beat it 100%, here are some photos to confirm. I apologize for the quality; I couldn't get rid of the glare or get a clear picture but if you look you can see 100%

Congratulation!
I assume you like the game? :P

Congratulations THOTH! :-)
Posted 2 years ago # -
wowo thoth you really are the minis pro here.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks! I wouldn't say I'm a pro but I do have a lot of free time on my hands. I definitely loved this game. The harder settings have more depth because you must use some strategy with the special weapons and you can't get hit too many times. The pacing is perfect and without question I'd play a sequel if it came out.

Speaking of THOTH's outstanding Minis performances, I'm still waiting for the day he finally posts his Freekscape level completion times in my thread under the High Scores category. That kutay2005 guy's got some excellent times, though.

Yeh THOTH... you da man!!!
;)Posted 2 years ago # -
Hey Onmode-ky I'll try to dig that up pretty soon and post it. I never got 100% though, I think I was at 97% or something close so I'm missing a few speed runs

Best score I can muster, after many tries, playing Survival mode on Insane difficulty using a ship with no upgrades (i.e., without playing any of the campaign at all):
17,304
Lovely. Never got past the first boss, and only rarely made it to him at all.

as soon as he appears blast him as much as possible, when he starts to go left and right always stay just ahead of him, it's the best safe spot because you can pummel him and, with practice, not get hit. Then he comes to rest in the centre of the screen, pummel him as much as you can as well as taking out all the little ships with your side guns to avoid being frozen, then watch the sides for the lazers, after that repeat the process.
Actually, I think the best safe spot is to stay at his sides, alternating between left and right by going around his back. Your side cannons hit him, while his side cannons miss you. As for his screen-filling laser blasts, I think it's more effective to watch for the pre-beams across the screen (right before they expand into the full beams) rather than watching the sides of the screen. The HUD blocks some of the sides.
My Survival high score on Competent, with all upgrades: 1,404,036. I got just past the phantom boss.
To anyone who plays Survival for remnant-grinding: I don't recommend that. Your objective in Survival should be to avoid getting hit; this is at odds with trying to maximize remnant collection, for which scenario you should ignore hits and just chase down every remnant orb you can, particularly the green (value of 500) and purple (value of 1000) ones. I recommend playing the final non-story level for remnant-grinding. You can rack up between 150,000 and 200,000 remnants in about 5 minutes, if you quit once the boss fight starts; he doesn't yield any remnants anyway.
THOTH, since you have the resident high score, does the campaign's final boss appear in Survival, like his precursors in the campaign's final level do? If so, is it just him, or do his wall and pinwheel of death appear as well? And, what comes after him?

@onmode-ky
It's just the last boss (no pre-bosses), then the whole thing starts over... and over... well it is 'Survival'.
;)Posted 2 years ago # -
Sorry Onmode-ky, I didn't notice your post. Thumbbandit comfirmed what I suspected. I actually only made it to the 2nd to last boss. I was able to get my high score by keeping my multiplier up.
Now that I've completed it 100% I'm almost tempted to start it on competent again because I know I can top my highscore with what I learned in die trying... but I don't want to lose my finished save file with that difficulty completed. I know the achievement will still show but it won't show 100% anymore unless you go through the entire campaign again.

Thanks for the info, guys. Are the pre-bosses from the final level the same guys as the bosses from the other levels? I actually thought they just used the same attacks; I did not notice whether they also looked the same. I just thought that in Survival, after passing through the non-story levels' bosses, the bosses you were fighting were the final level's pre-bosses.
THOTH, I don't know how you managed to keep your multiplier so high for so long. I eventually couldn't get beyond 5x or so before getting hit (thank you, inertia). Then again, I also didn't remember to use any of the special weapons most of the time.
You know, no one ever did give me any examples of scrolling shooters with inertia, aside from this game. I will have to conclude they were imagining things--I mean, lying. Yes, I have to say impolite things so that they will stir from their slumber and give me the information I seek. They were smelly liars. With pants engulfed in flame.

The gamut of bosses before the final boss I are slightly more vulnerable than before.. I think. As far as scrolling shooters with inertia; none come to mind...
Here's some general tips and tactics;
- Be familiar with the order of specialty weapons so you can keep your eye on bullets instead of focusing if you have the right one selected.
- Start out with the protecting ships (sorry I don't recall the exact names) these will absorb hits. Equip again when necessary. Immediately after activating the support ships switch to the green or invincibility so if you're in a pinch and can't dodge anything you can pass through it ( having the ability to switch it on and off helps a lot!).
- If you see a special weapon power up ( again, it really helps if you have the upgrade so the power up replenishes your selected weapon 100% and the rest 50%) before you pick it up quickly switch to the black hole weapon, empty it across the screen, quickly switch to orange and blast the aliens, switch back to purple so by the time you get the power up you're ready for the next round. Essentially you're emptying the clip before you pick up an ammo cache. This method is super destructive and helped me beat it on 'die trying'.
- Finally, avoid the slow down pick up if you have rockets, missiles, power bullets, or the speedy bullets. By avoiding it you're allowing more aliens to meet the wrath of your temporary power up.I hope this helps!

Thanks Thumbbandit, you know I just now realized that you can copy your save files in your PSP menu. I was confused at first because I thought you meant copying it in the game menu. I didn't see that option anywhere and then it dawned on me... I can't believe I've been playing my PSP this long without knowing about that. I copied it so now I'm going to try and beat my highscore for sure!

I guess everyone has a noob moment :)
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm assuming you're talking about copying a save file from one Memory Stick to another, since you can't make a copy on the same Stick--at least, not from the XMB. I back up my PSP save files to my computer through Media Go. If I screw up a save file while playing on the PSP, I can just restore the computer copy onto the Memory Stick. If, for some reason, I should feel compelled to have the save file copied on the same Memory Stick, I can just access the Stick's directory structure through Windows and make a copy of the save directory that way. It probably won't be usable by the game, what with the directory name being different (and sometimes having to match the content of the files inside it), but it's still there. I can swap between the save files by just renaming the directories.
Those are great tips you gave, though I don't think I'll be playing the game anymore myself. An additional thought: if you don't want to memorize the relative locations of the special weapons, you can simply press Start to bring up the pause menu, from which you can choose the one you want at your leisure while time is stopped in the game.

"you can simply press Start to bring up the pause menu, from which you can choose the one you want at your leisure while time is stopped in the game."
That's the very tactic I always use. ;)
