Hellboy546, you mean Cladun: This is an RPG. Easy way to remember it: "Cladun" is actually short for "classic dungeon [crawler]."

Ofaliss, while "role-playing game" is a generic-sounding phrase (heck, at one point over a decade ago, I thought it meant games with a first-person viewpoint), it is a term with specific connotations. Consider that "floppy disk" sounds like it refers only to disks you can easily bend, but those 3.5" floppies aren't very bendable (when I was very young, I briefly thought those were what "hard drive" referred to). The term "role-playing game" comes from a time when most things called "games," like chess, checkers, pinball, tennis, nuclear war, et al., did not involve stories and characters and were just structured concepts that tested skills and/or cognition.

RPG is such a generic description to me, it's generic to the point that it basically describes every game. San Andreas for example, im playing the role of a murdering gangbanger in a game. Bayonetta, im playing the role of a sexy witch with amnesia in a game. I could go on but you get the point, everything is a RPG in my opinion.

Generally speaking, RPG is about stat-building: the strength, speed, magic, etc. etc.
Zelda is an adventure game.
There is also a difference between JRPG and Western RPG. JRPGs, again, generally speaking is mostly about level-grinding and plot (Final Fantasy, Xenosaga, Suikoden Persona etc etc.) Western RPG gives more liberty to the player on what they want to do (Elder Scrolls, Fallout).

Be careful though, with these given parameters, my definition makes GTA: San Andreas an RPG. LOL.

I'm sorry.... lol "go into rpg mode"?
whoosh! entering RPG mode! [Cue cool music] spclefcts pts x 2! spd pts -10! begin!

To answer you're question a "game with RPG elements" can really mean anything nowadays, from having items purchased from shops and found in hidden places, to having customizable equipment, to turn based battles where you select from a number of options, to leveling up, to having different 'classes', to having points for your statistics (ie. "hit points", "magic points").

Yes, Zelda can be considered an action/adventure RPG, but its really closer to hack 'n slash due to lack of strategic elements.
