No, apparently only a few work now. It's the 17th that most of them will work. I would guess they need to add some sort of file to tell the emulator how to run it.

If you have Zombie Tycoon or Kahoots, it should work now. Also maybe Echoes, Blast Off and Stand o'Food.

WTF??

I just downloaded firmware 3.15 and then got circles. It dosent work on PS3. Same with fieldrunners. When I try to run it, it just says "This content is exclusively for use with the PSP. Would you like to transfer now?"

Am I doing something wrong?

so you had to convert it to get it to work on ps3 and that is the reason for the wait?
(if you dont mind me asking) did you guys (mini devs in general) get some kind of ps3 sdk to convert it?
or is it just because sony is developing a pspmini emulator and you just wanted to release it at the time of the emulator's release?
or how else did you make it on the ps3?

edit: just your comment in the news article, and you imply that it is an emulator. (mostly by saying "this emulator" lol :D)

Hi guys,

I can now say that this is why Cubixx has been delayed. Unfortunately it is looking as thought it is not going to be released until the 17th now. We are a bit frustrated but having seen it running on a PS3 is quite a sweetener. It looks and plays just great!

Thanks

Well hopefully you should see even more traffic now Chris as I trying to take advantage of all this renewed interest in minis to post some links to the site on various gaming outlets as they report the news.

There really is no better source of news and reviews for the minis catalogue then this site. So hopefully you'll be rewarded with some additional hits over the coming days.

Completely agree with you Booger. For the devs this is awesome news. And as a result it's just going to benefit consumers.

And for this site, it's awesome news too. I couldn't have hoped for better news.

Funny thing is I registered the domain psminis.com in anticipation of a move like this when I first started the site. So it looks like we will be dropping a letter off the domain sometime in the future.

It's a bit of a complicated job as I need to make sure every page from pspminis.com will redirect to it's new location on psminis.com. So don't know when it will happen as I need to free up adequate time to get it done.

Yup, this is awesome news to all the indie devs who just made the transition from iphone. It's essentially a PSN game but without having to code in trophy support or buying a PS3 devkit.

Sony keeps the price reasonable (not destructive like the App store), and PS3 owners actually buy their games (far more than PSP owners).

It's too late for me to get traction on the App store, but right now I have a fighting chance if I prototype my game in time for next year's IGF... I'm pretty sure Sony wants some exclusive minis as well.

Well it looks like the cat is out of the bag on this one. Joystiq is reporting that PS3 Firmware 3.15 will allow minis to be playable on PS3!!!

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/08/psp-minis-playable-on-ps3-with-firmware-update-3-15/

The PS EU blog broke the story today, and announced that the firmware update will be available Dec 17th. All minis downloaded after that date will be playable on both platforms. Any minis that have already been purchased can be re-downloaded (for free) with an updated copy that will work on the PS3 as well.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/12/08/ps3-system-software-update-3-15/

So I guess that means we should just start calling them "minis" instead of "PSP minis"?

Anyway this is good news and it should really boost the sales of these titles. This should effectively give the Xbox Indie Games a run for their money.

I just downloaded the Blast Off mini from the Store on PS3 and the little icon next to the date/time of download which says that format type now says "minis" instead of "PSP"

Also I noticed that when you copy the mini over to your PSP from your PS3, it no longer shows the screen "The content has been copied, do you want to delete it now"

Anyone noticed this on any other minis?

Not all the minis are that simple though. I mean, they often lack depth, but in terms of graphics, some are basically like regular games.

I mean, Let's Golf vs HSG or Pangya. The only real difference is the number of characters/outfits/courses.

And while Hero of Sparta is certainly no God of War, it is pretty graphical, on par with some regular PSP games, I think, like say the Untold Legends games.

Tetris = Lumines (more or less). Zombie Tycoon uses the Vicious engine, which also powers Puzzle Quest, Dead Head Fred, and 300.

So I'm actually agreeing with you, the PSP emulator might not be able to run everything, but if it can run all (or most) the minis, it can probably run a lot of the less graphical PSP games, too.

Well. I certainly hope it's true. I must say I think it is. I was tipped off by a source I can't name that there is was a major announcement due in November that would be very positive for this website.

Well November came and went and there was no announcement. But now these rumours. I can only think that this is the announcement I was told is coming.

At first I though it was great because it expands the audience for the minis. But then I realised the real plus of it. The fact this would essentially open up the PS3 to small time developers. It gives potential, and existing developers, more reason to jump on the minis bandwagon. If I was an indie or small developer the idea of the small entry fees of the minis program plus having my game available to play on the not just the PSP but the PS3 would be hugely attractive.

So if this is true I would expect a lot more developers to come on board. If you still only plan to play on your PSP then this is still great news for you.

Fingers crossed.

Sony is about to launch an UPDATE to the PS3 firmware that allows for minis to be playable on the PS3.

lol, didnt catch that before,
yeah it must be an emulator then......

a PSP emulator would run any PSP app (hopefully)

it might be what theyre trying to do,
but my guess is they would have trouble programming a full-psp emulator,
(last i checked) the greatest psp emulators for pc can only run a few commercial games (not "run well" just "run"),
so i take it it would be all too difficult to do (via software updates, at least)
but the minis being so simple would likely be alot easier to run on a psp emulator

Well, the only way I can see for it to work, is to have a PSP emulator on the PS3.

Because as pc points out, otherwise developers would have to make another version just for the PS3. Which besides requiring them to re-do the assets for a higher resolution, would need a PS3 dev kit to compile. Even assuming the same basic code can be used on the PS3 as the PSP (which I doubt)

OTOH, a PSP emulator would run any PSP app (hopefully) and automatically scale the graphics and maybe apply a few filters and such to improve them. Which can look pretty good in the case of 3d art, but usually looks awful in the case of 2d art. That's what the Xbox 360 does to Xbox games at least.

what i was really thinking might be cool was if sony made a psp emulator for the ps3, and charged like $30 or something for it,
of course the main problem with this is im pretty sure the resolution wouldent be good at all........
which makes me think that the developers for the minis are going to have to make 2 different versions for the minis (the ps3 ver. with higher resolution), meaning that all those people who're hoping that the minis they bought on psp will work on their ps3 will be disappointed,
but lets hope im just an idiot and the minis will work on both consoles.

Hmm, at first I didn't care as I'd rather play the Minis on PSP anyways (and they probably won't bother with trophies for minis). But David is totally correct, adding Minis to the PS3 as well will give devs more reason to make more games for us. Hopefully it's not just a rumor :)

So there is alot of buzz out there that Sony is about to launch an update to the PS3 firmware that allows for minis to be playable on the PS3.

My thoughts on this: While the minis are better suited for quick pick up and play gaming on the PSP, the PS3 audience would expand the minis user base and hopefully bring in even more developers. I think this would be a very positive development, for Sony, small developers, and gamers alike.
