Keeno on "Play own mp3s"

@Keeno

That's a nice list of features - thanks for the heads-up!

I particularly like (a) the easy way of running the CFW along with the standard firmware, and (b) the UMD backup feature for transfering existing UMD titles onto a PSPgo.

The UMD backup tool is something that Sony themselves should be encouraging IMO. They really missed the boat and screwed over PSP GO owners by not allowing them to get any of the games they paid for in UMD format. Even something as simple as posting off a UMD copy of a game and Sony send you a code to download a copy for the GO would really have helped the device. Being restricted to the limited and often overpriced PSN content has killed the GO. I'm sure there would be a way to create a backup of a UMD which also requires PSN account verification (like what happens when you download any game off the PSN) which will ensure it is only you who can play that copy and thus calm down and fears of piracy and people sharing backups.

People who only own a PSP Go are still of course left in the dark here which is crazy. When you are not even giving the option to pay, it comes down to a situation where you either don't get games which are available for every other model of PSP other than the most expensive one you bought, or are forced into piracy. Sony should have tried to expand the ways people can legally obtain games instead of leaving them with that conundrum.

Firmware 6.37 fixed the kernel exploit that the custom firmware I linked to uses, so if you've upgraded, you are stuck with what you have sadly.

Like others here, I don't encourage piracy at all and continue to buy minis and games from the PSN store. But the custom firmware really has made my Go the device it had the potential to be. I used to have the situation where it was carry around my bulky old 1st gen PSP, or make do without any of my UMD games. The pro firmware enabled me to have access to those (and my old Psone games!) on the go, and without resorting to downloading illegal copies of them.

To add to Keeno's post: Pandora batteries will ONLY recover PSP 1000s (i.e. the original ones) and early PSP 2000s (i.e. the slim ones). It will not work for later PSP 2000s, PSP 3000s or PSP Gos.

To find out if it would work on your PSP 2000, run the Pro CFW Keeno linked, then from it run "PSPident" (google it). If you have a PSP 2000, and it says you have a "ta-088v3" motherboard, Pandora batteries will not work. (PSPident can't be signed and run on OFW because it requires features OFW won't allow even signed stuff to access - CFW removes this issue by giving access to everything)

For those on 6.35 wanting to try CFW, THIS is the best way. Unlike most of the older ones, you don't need to downgrade/install it. You still run the official firmware, but from your game folder can access it whenever you want. As soon as you do a full power down, that's you back to running official firmware. Just delete it from your memory stick and it's gone forever

You can indeed still access the PSN store even whilst using an older firmware. You can use one of the plugins in the custom firmware to 'change' the firmware version.. I bought some minis this week so it most definitely works!

CFW does have some brilliant advantages. The plugins are handy and allow for some neat changes. The O/X swap in this one is great! Another useful feature is the Psone emulator. The selection on the playstation EU store in particular is rubbish so it's great to be able to go rip your old psone games and play them.

If you own a regular psp and a psp go like myself, this firmware also lets you create backups of your own UMD's which you can put on your psp go. To my knowledge it's about the only piracy free way of getting quite a lot of games onto the go, as the law in most countries allows to you make back up copies for your own personal use.

I'd imagine everyone here is running the latest firmware if you are still buying minis, but if you have a spare PSP lying around at 6.35 or less, I'd encourage you to consider giving 6.35 PRO B-4 a go. This will give you an idea of some of the possibilites opened up download list

EDIT: I'd also like to add that for the CFW I linked to, as it is not a permanent install, their is NO risk of bricking your psp (although as I'm sure you are aware even this can be rectified with a pandora battery - google them!)

This is still on topic IMO. We're discussing different ways to extract additional value from the PSP platform, such as using homebrew/custom functionality to provide additional control over media management (aka playing your own MP3s during gameplay). Sounds good to me.

My view regarding homebrew is: I bought my PSP. I own the damn thing. As long as I'm not hurting anyone or committing piracy, then I'll do whatever I want with it thank you very much. If I choose to run homebrew software or even put the device in a blender, then that is my business.

My view on DRM: I fully understand (and support) service providers utilising methods to protect their intellectual property and preventing piracy and copyright violations. I don't however think that it is appropriate at all for service providers to prevent me from consuming the content that I pay for in whatever way I see fit (as long as it's for my own use and I'm not committing piracy). If I pay for a media service (be it some music/videos/film or a computer game) then it is entirely up to me whether I choose to consume that media on a PC, PS3, XBox, portable media player, CD, iOS device, car, phone, tablet, kitchen sink). It is entirely wrong for DRM to be used to restrict me in that way. DRM is used to combat piracy but actually ends up harming legitimate customers who simply want to consume their media in perfectly legitimate ways. </rant>

My view on piracy is: Piracy is a bad thing. I expect to pay artists for their creativity. I expect to pay the media distribution ecosystems for providing the infrastructure and services that makes the content available to me. This is because I myself expect to get paid when I do a days work and so I don't begrudge paying other people for the work they do to entertain me.

I agree whole heartedly. I think backups are somewhat a grey area, but tbh, there is no real difference between that and say, ripping a music CD with a program like iTunes or Windows Media Player. Same concept.

The main problem I have with them is that they allow piracy. There is little or no way around this for the developers of the applications, so that in actual fact, the ones who care either don't develop them or don't release them. The ones that get released are generally by people who know their work will be used for piracy and don't care. That's what really bothers me tbh. There is no real way for a homebrew dev to add "DRM" or something similar, and if they did, it would probably be hacked very quickly and only actually serve to annoy "legitimate" users.

Anyhow, we're getting off topic, and we're at huge risk of being flamed massively by several strongly anti-homebrew, "all homebrew is piracy and illegal and ruins everything" types that frequent these forums.

not authorized, that would imply that Sony allow it. it can be unofficially "signed" so the psp will see it as a valid game/app it is allowed to run.

All PSPs can run homebrew. And now, all PSPs can even run a hacked firmware, provided you haven't updated past 6.36 or something like that. But whether or not you should "hack" it depends on what you want it for.

Things you can do without any "hacking":

*All official functions
*Run most homebrew (via "signing")

Things you need to hack for:

*Some homebrew (larger homebrew, stuff that uses certain features of PSP not available on OFW)
*Clocking the CPU to higher than normal (improves game performance)
*Utilizing full RAM in homebrew
*Running "backups" off Memory Stick (DON'T ABUSE THIS FOR PIRACY)
*"plugins" - small pieces of code that tap into the PSPs firmware to add features. Examples include playing music during game play (or internet browsing or whatever), sorting games into custom categories, a plugin called Hold+ that will turn off the screen and underclock the CPU when you put the PSP on Hold so that music can still play but battery use is greatly reduced etc.

One of the main downsides to "Custom Firmware" is lack of PSN access, but there are now plugins to get around that too. Certainly for the store, and I think in games to. But you can't update games from the XMB.

Only install Custom Firmware if the stuff in the second list appeals to you.

If you want to run homebrew then you don't really need to put custom firmware on it. If you just want to play homebrew you don't need to hack your PSP. Most homebrew now is "signed" meaning that it can run on PSPs running Sony's official firmware. For example I have many homebrew games and a GBA emulator on my PSP that is running official firmware.

Also, some PSPs can't be hacked but most can. Also, hacking your PSP voids your warranty so if anything goes wrong then you're stuffed.

That's simply not true Takao. In the homebrew community, there is a "plugin" (i.e. a small hack to the system software) which allows you to play music within any game. Sony just haven't added it officially, and judging by the number of features added by recent official updates (i.e. none), they won't either.

I forgot about the GTA's. Since you had to download the converter from Rockstar's website, rip the music from a CD, and then put them on your PSP in a special folder, it was too much of a hassle to be bothered with. Especially since they both had great soundtracks anyway. LCS being better than VCS.

I remember one of the developers/publishers saying some where in the forums here, that Sony doesn't allow mini's to have custom soundtracks (play your own music).

I would imagine they aren't allowed to for Minis (since they have to run on a PS3 as well).

But for regular PSP titles, I guess at first they couldn't figure out how (I remember the first GTAs let you, but you had to convert them first) and then later on, they just didn't bother to most of the time.

Do you mean just the minis, or all PSP games? I know Wipeout Pulse lets you listen to your own mp3's in game, but that's the only PSP game that I know of that does.
