Not a mini, but Kurulin Fusion came up in discussion in the news comments.

I picked up Kurulin Fusion on sale last year and for only $2 thought it was great value. It's a very interesting puzzle game that I did enjoy for several months. The core gameplay was solid, and the challenges were varied and enjoyable, but the difficulty made the game feel like pure luck at times.
The soundtrack in Kurulin is good, but not especially lengthy so does get grating after some time.
The graphics are very well done. The blocks all look vibrant, and the animations are surprisngly flashy.
The gameplay can be extemely difficult. In Kurulin you have to fuse blocks and place detonators, matching their corresponding colours. The two sometimes come down together, making it difficult to keep your blocks from clearing. The board itself is fairly small, which makes it very difficult to keep colours seperate. When trying to fuse larger blocks, you usually have to choose just one colour and hope you get enough blocks, as you'll need to clear the other colours to avoid having the board fill.
That being said, the challenges in Kurulin Fusion were extremely enjoyable. Some of the most challenging and rewarding involved needing to clear multiple fused blocks of a certain size. Making larger blocks is extremely difficult. Not only do you need to keep the detonators seperate from your blocks, the blocks themselvs only fuse in regular patterns (1x2,2x2,1x3,2x3,3x3).
The main game is a basic match 3 or tetris style gameplay. The blocks fall eternally, so long as you can keep clearing the space. The downfall is there seems to be little reward to creating larger fusions. I found myself avoiding the risk/reward of the larger fusions, though I've never been one to chase highscores. The only time I actively tried to build a bigger fusion was when the gameplay was beginning to speed up, as you could jump past several levels with a large chain.
The real downfall in the game is the difficulty. Not only does the number of colours increase, but the speed does as well. The speeds seemed to be on a tiered system, increasing by level and then reseting again (I think every 10 levels). This is ok in the main game, since you can plan ahead and leave yourself some easy points to race through the faster speeds. The challenges are tiered in this same fashion, but an entire row of challenges is at each speed. I eventually got stuck and gave up because of this. I'm a big fan of puzzle games and usually continue playing, even if I no longer enjoy the game. The ridiculous speed made these challenges feel like sheer luck.

Overall I would have to give the game a 8. Recommended, but at $4 you may want to look into other puzzle games.

confuletlyf on "Enigmo - Review (confuletlyf)"

I got a free copy in the giveaway last month so thought I'd share my thoughts on this game.

Enigmo is a unique puzzler. You need to deflect drops of water in order to activate switches and reach a container placed in the level. The controls seem well laid out, though some of the finepoints are only revealed upon trial and error. Attempting to line up longer shots was very difficult until I discovered that you could decrease the sensitivity when rotating a piece using square/triangle.

The graphics are nice, and even though the levels are bare you do not notice as you have to think very carefully how to place your pieces.

You are given a limited supply of bumpers and other specialized materials to deflect the drops, and rarely do you have any extra parts. These different items should have been introduced each time you are first allowed to use them. The only way to discover an objects use was trial and error, which although not frustrating was a little disappointing. Again, short tutorials or descriptions would have been appreciated.
The game itself plays well with only a few minor hiccups. Occassionally the game shifts pieces that are off screen. This sometimes requires you to manually adjust pieces that you have already placed, but is rarely so severe as to warrant a restart. Sometimes the angles the drops bounce at seem inconsistent, and the drops appear to only be able to travel a certain time/distance.
There is a score system which depletes over time. If your score reaches zero there is no penalty and you can continue to adjust your pieces. While being able to solve all puzzles is nice, a little bit of pressure from this time limit would have made the game much more interesting.

The menus are a little too simple, and lacking some options. I free look mode would have been nice since some puzzles were extremely challenging and I found myself wanting to see the solution in action. Return to level select is missing, meaning you must wait for the next level to load (and show you all emitters, triggers, and goals) before you can return to main menu/level select. A replay level would also have been nice in order to attempt a high score. High scores are visible from the level select only.

In all the game is a very enjoyable and unique puzzle entry. Anyone liking games requiring though should consider this a must buy.
7/10 - BUT must play for puzzle/logic fans

This game has gotten a lot of attention here, both good and bad. Since I finally broke down and bought it I thought I'd throw out my thoughts on it. Never done a review format but am hoping to start a trend in this part of the forums. Please limit responses to additional reviews/quick reviews.

-Gameplay is solid. Occasionally the game misses a special attack input and continues attacking but nothing gamebreaking. My largest complaint was the handling of item/skill usage. Rather than having the tried and trusted L+button for attacks and R+button for items, the game opted for an awkward L+button to use, and R to change between items or skills. The skills are well balanced and well animated in the 8-bit feel.

-Graphics look very good. Not visually stunning but gives a perfect retro zelda feel.

-Sounds are ok, but the attack noise can get annoying if you're playing in a quiet room.

-Story. I haven't beaten this yet but the story is strong enough to hold the game together. The flavour text from NPCs are humorous, even poking fun at standard game mechanics and ignoring the 4th wall.

-Longevity. I'm playing as an evil warrior and will definitely replay at least once to see the good story, as well as try rogue.

9/10 - though given the price I'm dropping it to an 8. Deffinitely worth playing, am going to get quite a bit of playtime from this, but at nearly the price of a PS1 classic RPG this seems almost overpriced. The small filesize won out.

again, please keep replies to other reviews. This section of the forums could become very useful to us regulars if we decide to to use it.

This is a poll for what you rate A Space Shooter for 2 Bucks! And here is my review/reasons for liking game. I really loved this game for its price point (obviously;) and its re-playability. It has a nice style of graphics with fully voiced(and humorous) dialogue. Now as most of you know there is a "progression bug"* causing many people to lose their... well, progression. I (thankfully) have only had this happen twice in minor issues so it doesn't affect my rating of a 10!
*This bug** commonly occurs when you go into "sleep mode" so don't touch that power switch! :)

~Vector TD, a tower defense game, was released yesterday on the Playstation Store, as you probably know. The game was originally a flash game online at candystand.com, but they decided to port it to the PSP. Vector TD's gameplay is brilliant. You can choose from 8 different courses to play through. The gameplay is similar to Fieldrunners, however, unlike Fieldrunners, you can only place towers alongside already made paths. Another thing different than Fieldrunners is that you cannot return to the middle of a game after a day or two. You either have to finish it or quit in the middle of the game.

~ As you can see, there's 11 different towers to choose from. The first four are green, blue, purple, and red. The other seven are just better versions of those four towers. Every tower is upgradeable, the max you can upgrade it is 10 times. You can also sell towers for 75% of the purchase price. Occasionally, you will come across a bonus. They can be redeemed for four different things. "Cash Bonus," which will increase your cash by a certain percent every time you finish a wave. "Panic," which will give you an extra five lives. "Damage Booster," which will up the power of all towers in range by 25%. And finally, "Range Booster," which will up the range of all towers in range by 25%. One of the downsides of this game is that it does not keep your highscores. Personally, I think that this is something they could have improved. The controls are easy and simple to learn. There is also an option "autowave," which means that waves will come automatically. Otherwise, you have to hit "triangle" every time you're ready for the next wave. You start with 20 lives, and there is a total of 50 waves each game. That may not seem like much, but it normally takes about 30-45 minutes for the average person.

~ As you can see above, the game gets pretty insane and intense :) Anyways, all in all, this Mini is pretty good for the price of $3.99 (US). If you wish to try out the online flash version, follow this link: http://www.candystand.com/play/vector-td. If you want to see the actual Mini in action, check out the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdjlNimo8zk. In comparison to Fieldrunners, I would actually have to say Fieldrunners is better, however, it is also more expensive. For the tower defense fan, this is a must-buy. Hope this helped for anybody considering buying the game!!! :)

Okay! Just for a bit of introduction, Young Thor is a game by Frima Studios, who brought us the stellar mini-rts 'Zombie Tycoon'. It is built using the same engine, called 'Vicious Engine', and therefore if you own Zombie Tycoon you'll already have some idea of what to expect in terms of quality graphics. However, Young Thor uses the Vicious Engine to create a sidescrolling brawler with 3D graphics.

GRAPHICS
The graphics are absolutely stunning. Not just 'good for a mini', but just outright darn good. Quite cartoonish in style, Young Thor seems to have taken a few pages from Zombie Tycoon's book (understandable, considering it's the same developers) and once again delivers quirky, odd characters. Your hero looks more like a hobbit than a god of thunder, but somehow between the amusingly styled character and the brilliantly designed, yet somehow silly enemies, the game comes off really well, pulling together its own unique style. Again, like Zombie Tycoon. Oh, and the effects for Thor's magical spells are extremely nicely done, definitely the best stuff I've seen on a mini. All of Thor's equipment that he can find during the game appears individually on your character, and takes him from looking rather like a hobbit with a mallet (I seem fixated on hobbits, but I swear, Peregrine Took is playing Thor) to a...hobbit with a shinier mallet. And a winged helmet.

ANIMATION
I know this isn't usually included, but I personally have gotten quite obsessive about good animation. I actually dropped Spider-man from my team on MUA2 because he looks like a deranged howler monkey when he moves. However, in Young Thor - well, I have no idea where the developers got their inspiration, unless they found a berserk hammer-wielding hobbit, but they got this down pat. Thor has a large variety of moves that he can perform, and everything from plain old running to his hammer-slam is spectacularly done, and really makes your pint-sized demigod feel like a champion of...well...truth. Or Justice. Or maybe just mead and valkyries. The enemies weren't neglected either - although there isn't a huge variety of enemy types, all of them are animated quite nicely and have their own idle animations and a variety of attacks. The Frost Giants are particularly impressive in this regard. Also, when fighting goblins, you will periodically receive a delightful surprise - one that startled me the first time and got me chuckling the second.

SOUND
Absolutely serviceable. I don't tend to focus much on sound when I'm playing, and therefore try to limit my comments in reviews. The music is good, the enemy sounds are good, the sounds for Thor's attacks are particularly good because each one sounds as if you're doing what you're doing. As if I'd know what releasing lightning bolts from my mini mallet sounded like. I suspect if anyone's a fan of really good martial music the sound will please them. Reportedly Thor swears in Nordic, but to me it sounds like insane mumbling. I really need to adjust the sound volumes, but it's just too darn much fun to be distracted with option menus.

CONTROLS
The controls are smooth as silk and responsive as a well trained horse. Don't worry if you don't get the analogy, I haven't ridden a horse, but it sounds good. Basically, Thor does what you want him to do when you want him to do it, no fuss, no muss. The only oddity I've noticed is that the default controls are set to ignore the analog stick and only use the d-pad for input. Definitely not a problem, though, considering I find the analogy stick to be a bit twitchy at times anyway. My only gripe about the controls is really more a gameplay design choice - once Thor's committed to an attack, even by accident, you're stuck until you finish. There are a huge variety of attacks to choose from, and I found that all of them were extremely intuitive and easy to pull off.

STORY
Well...You've got Hel, see, she's a very nasty lady who apparently is really angry at the world because her local beauty spa accidentally used a highly acidic mudpack on half of her face and left her...really ugly. She's mad anyway, and the saying 'Hell hath no fury' doesn't apply here, because Hel is scorned, and Hel runs Hell. Something I found amusing, but hey - I'm not a Viking, maybe that made sense to them. She does...evil stuff. And you stop her. Probably. There's something about a tree, too, but honestly, none of it seems that important. The 'cutscenes' are beautifully done in an odd fusion of the game's design and some sort of pseudo-chibi anime. It looks rather like the PowerPuff Girls combined with Samurai Jack. Actually, that's kind of the whole theme of this game summed up in one. Plus Thor's a Hobbit. Did I mention that already?

POWER UP!
Young Thor's kind of an RPG-light. By which I mean yes, you get experience points, but you can't allocate anything when you level up, you just get stronger. You get upgraded gear (which appears on your character, which I still think is awesome, but hey, I moved from my GBA to a PSP a few weeks ago, I'm still euphoric over the fact that I have a customized wallpaper) but since you cannot choose from different pieces of gear, the whole upgrade system rings a bit hollow. However, once you play a few levels you hit a point where you realize leveling is very important. It's also fun to level up a bit and play an earlier level and really feel like a god of thunder slapping critters around. You can also earn achievements (which is great, I am really enjoying trying to unlock them), encylopedia entries (which if I read more, I'd probably have a better idea what's going on in the game, but again, there are monsters to smash and if I were reading it'd be a textbook) and pickups, which range from runes that empower Thor the Hobbit (did I mention he's a hobbit?) temporarily, and apples, which restore health, mana, or everything. The apples are huge, too, it's just weird. Probably a good thing Hobbits can eat so much.

GENERAL GAMEPLAY THOUGHTS
The entire package just...is so slickly put together it's frightening. Some of the other mini's I own feel like hackjobs (Dracula wotsit whatever it's called is a notable mention) but Thor, I would have easily paid ten dollars for. Picking it up for five just makes the deal sweeter. I tend to look at any game and ask myself 'what is this game trying to do?' and evaluate it based on that. Basically, it is quite clear that what Young Thor is trying to do is make you feel like a famous god of thunder that is trying to save the world. The developers perfectly balanced extremely challenging gameplay (word to the wise - don't go straight from a two-skull level to a five-skull level. They're serious about the skulls) with a remarkably frequent euphoria where you'll find yourself gripping your PSP and cackling maniacally as you deal out some thunderous fury to poor little goblins. The controls never get in the way, there are frequent enough checkpoints so screwing up doesn't set you too far back, and there are frequent points where the levels become somewhat nonlinear and permit you to do a little exploring to find more monsters or items. And since I obsessively replay games I enjoy, I am happy that the entire game is designed around your wanting to replay levels again and again, with one of the more interesting achievements being given for maxing out your character's level. Young Thor is simple and easy enough to control that it could be handed to a kid (who'd probably have better reflexes than I do anyway) and they would very much enjoy it, but it's also a nice walk down memory lane for those of us old enough to remember when Mario Brothers was king and if you screwed up in a game, you started over. It's nice to see a game this accessible, this challenging, and this charming all in one package.

VALUE
It's five dollars. Level one will take you five to ten minutes. Then you will look at the clock and realize you've been smiting your enemies for half an hour. Then time will slip away into an endless cycle of hammer wielding hobbits and bolts of lightning. In all seriousness, it is fantastic for relaxing (because the levels are reasonably short) and it is so beautifully done that it is a real pleasure to support a company that does good quality work like this. So yes...five dollars? Definitely worth it.

THOUGHTS FOR THE DEVELOPERS
It would be nice to have a hammer throw attack, and there are not enough levels. Not that the game needs more, it's more that I need more Young Thor games. Or expansions. Or a level editor. Or...all of the above.

Thanks for reading!

Hydravision's BrickBreaker is an excellent clone of the classic Breakout. It does exactly what is says on the tin. It's basically just you against a pile of static bricks (with each level presenting you with a new formation of bricks to be broken). This is good news if you like the original, pure, classic Breakout gameplay and are tired of all the 'updated' clones which aren't true to the old one.

As mentioned above the gameplay in BrickBreaker is clean without being too bloated and filled up with extravaganza such as too many 'wow-look-at-me' power-ups and other needless features that take away from the original simple style. As far as I can recall, BrickBreaker contains of less than 10 different power-ups with the green-coloured being 'the good guys' and the orange ones being 'bad'. Among the good power-ups you'll find rocket launchers (which can be used to shoot down bricks one by one), extra balls, extra lives, and pad glue. The orange (bad) power-ups will make either your pad or ball(s) shrink.

BrickBreaker consists of two different game modes; the 'Classic Mode' and 'Dual Paddle Mode'. Classic mode is the one we know as the normal version with one pad located at the bottom of the screen whereas the Dual Paddle Mode has an extra pad located at the top. The Dual Paddle mode works a little like Pong where you need to use both pads in order to keep the ball alive until all bricks on each level are gone. This mode is fairly trickier to play than 'Classic Mode'.

Graphics-wise the game looks neat with a nice, simple uncluttered layout and user interface. I especially really dig those beautiful retro looking bricks and the game's entire colour scheme. The background (albeit static) is pleasant to look at too and further more it doesn't distract from the most important thing; the gameplay. The musical element of the game can best be described as an ambient Latin-Jazz melody I think. it's quite a catchy tune without being annoying even after a (long) while of playing. The sound effects are appropriate too without over-doing it.

There are two control schemes in the game and both work fine. You can either move the pad by using left/right on the D-pad or you can choose to use the shoulder buttons (L1 + R1) instead if that works better for you. Personally, I would have liked to have the extra option to use left D-pad + 'O' face button, but the other two methods are still sufficient enough.

I only have a couple of issues with the game, one minor being the game clock. There's a clock running next to the game showing the elapsed game time, but it has no effect on the high scoring whatsoever thus making its appearance absolutely redundant. It would have been a nice feature to implement the total game time in each high score. The other issue is a little more severe and has to do with the lack of pad sensitivity in certain situations. When the ball for instance slightly bounces from left to right sometimes it can be very hard to change the ball's direction back to where it came from. It really doesn't ruin the over-all gaming experience that much though (depending on your patience, or lack thereof, of course), but it's still a minor gripe I have with the game. The pad sensitivity is certainly something that should and could have been better adjusted. Without these issues the game would have been pretty much perfect for what it set out to be and I'm hoping Hydravision will improve on this in an (hopefully) upcoming update. It's still a fun, enthralling game, however, if you like this kind of genre.

In short, not too many bells and whistles in BrickBreaker - the pure gameplay speaks for itself and does it well. BrickBreaker is currently less than 3 euros on the PSN Store and worth every cent. Highly recommended. 7/10

Alien zombie death….you see that name and think “WHAT THE HECK!?”. Well don’t judge by the name, its actually really fun and addicting!

You play as a lone space man, in space doing…..something. You kill little alien zombies, this may sound harmless enough…until there are two hundred of them trying to eat you. There is a reasonably wide range of enemy’s. from the standard green alien to much larger, projectile launching, blob. Each enemy takes a certain amount of shots to kill, which keeps it interesting.

The level design is very good! You can play on fourteen levels or “moons” which you unlock by earning medals. Mostly the levels look the same though some are a little bigger. And just to add to the confusion of shooting aliens, plasma beams and spinning saws scroll across the screen. Its really hard to keep from hitting one of these while at the same time trying to fend off from hundreds of aliens. On that note the game is VERY challenging!

The controls are simple and easy to get a hang of. You use square to shoot left and circle to shoot right. You can use either the analog stick or the D-Pad to move. Push UP and you jump to the level above you. Push DOWN and obviously you go to the level below. And of course you use right and left to move right and left. I prefer the D-Pad because if you use the analog stick you may jump up or down by accident, and that could kill you.

The only thing I found flawed was-Not many power ups, and they have a timer which runs way too fast to actually use the weapon.

Summing up.

Gameplay 8/10

FUN, ADDICTING, CHALLENGING!!
Good range of levels and enemys. Not to many power ups though

Graphics 7/10

Sharp and colorful!

Overall score

8/10

You can go wrong with this game. Its one of those you can just pick up and play.

Bloons TD Review

When I was back at school, any “study” period I had, used to be spent playing games, most notably the free online game Bloons Tower Defence. It was a fantastic game which I hoped would one day make its way to the PSP. Now it has! Just like all tower defence games, the object is to build towers, upgrade them and use your best strategic mind to stop wave after wave of enemies. Bloons TD sends 50 waves of balloons at you at over 15 courses (3 from the online version) with easy, medium and hard levels. You start with red balloons which only need one dart to pop them, but soon go to other coloured balloons which have more balloons inside to pop, faster balloons and special balloons. To assist is a wide range of towers (or monkeys) each quite unique. There’s 8 different types, 3 aids (spikes, glue and an exploding pineapple!) and each can be upgraded 4 times (usually 2 for range and 2 for firepower). The balloons follow a set path, you place towers around this (unlike fieldrunners).

The game looks fantastic on the PSP, it’s colourful and well designed. The controls have been cleverly mapped with L button bringing up the tower menu. X used to place and choose each tower, Square slows down the cursor (which is crucial to be able to place them down in the exact location) and a very nice feature, triangle starts off each round and circle cancels. The good use of controls is one of its greatest feature and unclutters the screen as the tower menu only appears when pressing L and is hidden the rest of the time. The game, just like the best in tower defence, is incredibly addictive and 15 courses will keep you going for hours on end. I already own Fieldrunners and PixelJunk Monsters, two of the best tower defence games on the PSP and Bloons TD is on a par with them, I think it’s even better than Fieldrunners. If you’re new to tower defence this is a perfect start.

The game in whole is brilliant, well worth buying and I couldn’t recommend it more, so i’ve decided to focus on its few weaknesses then its many strengths. When the balloons are in full flow and you have several monkeys on screen at once, things do get very cluttered. It’s all very fast and letting a balloon through simply because you can’t access the spikes or another monkey fast enough is a bit annoying. The soundtrack is really good, catchy and well suited, but there is only the one song on loop and can be annoying after extended playing (although I tend to play for hours, just a small amount of time I don’t think would annoy everyone). The game stops after completing 50 waves, I always like games that give you the chance to keep going and it only lists your highest wave level, there’s no high score tables.

All these things though are very minor issues which don’t take away from the main game. It’s absolutely brilliant, highly time consuming (although you can save and quit if you’re in a rush) and one of the best tower defences around, I’d recommend it to new players and tower defence veterans. There are 5 versions online to play for free (and if you’re still not sure try Bloons Tower defence 3 online as a demo (the 3 tracks were taken from this version)) but if you’re like me and want tower defence on the move, this is the game to get!

Score 9/10

(I could have written more about it, but thought I’d keep it to a review length so if anyone has any questions, I’d happily answer them!)

Zoibie on "Hysteria Project Review"

Hysteria Project feels like just that... a project. A media project for school which gives a chance for the plucky young student to practise using his expensive camera and his new video editing software his Dad paid so much money for, whilst being able to re-enact his favourite horror movie sequence. In fact, it's not much of a game at all, more a series of cut scenes and image tomfoolery with options in between, but as it turns out, this simple format can provide an unusually compelling experience, despite the obvious downfalls of releasing it for minis.

As far as horror films go, it's nothing special; just your run-of-the-mill evil entity chasing after you with a health-and safety-hazard, but put in the form of Sega CD style FMV 'game', it works remarkably well. It's akin to skipping the first hour of boring exposition of any horror movie and going straight to the escape scene. And that's part of the intrigue: you have no idea where you are, how you got there or who/what's after you.

A lot of the game is spent running through the woods (well, watching a video of your character running through the woods), but the video will occasionally be interrupted and you'll forced to make some sort of a decision, such as hide/keep running or set trap/stay hidden. In the latter half of the game, these options are mostly trial and error with a lot of them resulting in cheap deaths; at least the game has the courtesy to include retries.

Surprisingly, 'puzzles' also make an appearance in Hysteria Project (the term being used lightly.) In keeping with the whole 'running away from death' aspect, the 'puzzles' are just a different way of telling you which route to take, thrown in with a timer to make things a good deal more irritating.

Gameplay is limited to just choosing an option, or pressing 'X' or 'O' during the games video sequences, but I have to give Hysteria Project credit for the way it includes its quicktime events. Like most people, I'm not a fan of button prompts, but in Hysteria Project, they're only used when they're necessary: usually during the game's action sequences. They're never distracting so they help keep you immersed as you're watching your character try to sneak quietly from one place to another.

For a game which focuses so heavily on these FMV sequences, the video is very important. Unfortunately, as you might expect from the file size limitations, the video has been compressed quite a bit. The bad quality is much more noticeable in the faster, action sequences and does let it down somewhat; but then I guess you could argue that the unclear video adds to the shadowy atmosphere... if you're one of them 'games-as-art' types.

The audio is one of the best parts of the game. The soundtrack is eerie and much like what you'd expect to find in a full retail release. On top of the music, there can be any number of creepy and expertly produced sound effects, most notable being the 'scream' that resonates around the woods whenever you turn to face the creature chasing you. This experience is slightly marred however; upon start up, the game recommends using some headpones, however with some scenes I found there was a distinct clicking sound alternating between ears. It could have been an intentional way of trying to immerse you (somehow) but, more likely, it was due to the compression on the audio.

So, to wrap this up in a nice, neat package, minis are both perfect for, and a substantial detriment to Hysteria Project. At 80MB in size, it seems they could have spent an extra 20MB improving some of the video sequences or the audio; after all, the recently released "Monsters (in all likelihood, given previous gaming conventions) Stole My Princess" was 300KB over the limit. Still, it's a unique experience, which wouldn't really work if it was released on any other platform: petty nuisances aside, there's a lot of enjoyment to be had. There are worse ways to spend £1.20/$1.99 and with the prospect of a sequel, this could turn out to be great property for minis.

~Kahoots is a weird, weird game in all the right ways. Beneath its pink and pastel color scheme, singing tour guide, and cute enemies called Cardborgs is a nifty little puzzler that's sure to cook your frontal lobe and leave you with an aching head.

~Better still: it's like Echochrome on an acid trip.

~A 2D title, Kahoots has the mouse dude (called a Kahoot) walking from one side of the screen to the other on platforms made up of individual blocks. Your job is to get the Kahoot to the level exit. If you have your little buddy leap off into the great unknown – any empty space on the screen with no platform underneath -- the Kahoot will fall from the sky until it makes contact with a platform again. This is also true if you walk off the side of the screen.
~You move the on-screen cursor and swap these blocks with any of the other blocks it's touching. Now, swapping in plain blocks would be pretty worthless, so you need to move in blocks that fling your Kahoot over obstacles, get deadly spikes out of the way, offer trap doors that drop the little man down below, and so on. You need to move these blocks so that you're not only getting the Kahoot to the door, but also pushing the Kahoot-eating Cardborgs out of the picture.

~This block-movin' craziness is spread across 50 levels and the challenges only get tougher as the levels go on. You need to maneuver Cardborgs into the right spots so that they can eat the cardboard boxes that act as an impenetrable wall for your little character while making sure the Kahoot never runs into the deadly creature or life-ending spikes. When you move a box, time freezes, but you can also freeze time to scope things out with the left shoulder button or fast-forward with the right shoulder button when you just need to get the Kahoot wherever it is he's going. Add in the fact that there's an optional cupcake in every level that you'll need to go out of your way to collect to unlock Kahoots' in-game awards, and you've got a lot to manage.

~Kahoots biggest strength is its individuality. When a new piece of the game is introduced, a hackysack/clothespin creature named Pegbeast pops up to sing instructions to you. If you choose to skip the musical tutorial by clicking "Shut Up, Pegbeast," the creature apologizes in an adorable British accent. When you beat a level, a multicolor ticker tape parade is set off as the Kahoot cheers in a high-pitched voice. If you die in a level, the game freezes, circles your character in red, and writes "fail" next to the dead Kahoot. It's quirky, and it's welcome.

~My only real problem with Kahoots is that I didn't really feel compelled to go on when I'd get stuck. I'd run into a stumper or just get frustrated because of my own stupidity, and feel no real reason to keep going. There's no high score or timetable to chase, most of the awards are just doing something a certain number of times, and the unlockable photos of clay Kahoots in the real world are goofy but not enthralling. Personally, I need a carrot and a stick to pour over puzzles in games like this. Kahoots doesn't have that driving force.

~Smaller issues, to me at least, include that the initial load is a bit long; the $4.49 price tag seems a bit steep for what you're getting; and all of the levels are unlocked for you to tackle in any order you like, but navigating the map is a bit of a pain as it's not super-clear as to which level you're highlighting.

Closing Comments
~Kahoots is a very fun puzzler game, but it is rather annoying sometimes. Obviously, this game is not for everyone, but people who enjoy good puzzle games would probably enjoy this one. One of the few things that could have been improved is the price. For $4.49, this game is an OK buy, but would have been a lot better with a lower price.
Total Score: 7/10
Would I suggest it to someone? Only if they liked puzzlers, otherwise, no.

~Brainpipe, one of the first of the PSP Minis, is not a deep game by any means. In essence, Brainpipe has players simply traveling down a pipe at varied speeds. However, it’s the game’s trippy visuals, mind-numbing speed, and trance-inducing music that pack the game full of character. These levels show what it might look like to watch an electrochemical nerve impulse travel to the brain while tripping on acid and listening to techno.

~Players travel down the pipe at full speed, dodging obstacles while snatching strange symbols. There doesn’t seem to be any meaning behind the symbols, and they don’t seem to serve much of a purpose, aside from giving the player something to do while speeding down the “brainpipe.”
~The graphics aren't the best, but don’t really need to be spectacular in this case, mostly because players will be too distracted by the warp speed gameplay. Even without any variety to the gameplay, it is still very addicting to play, even without much sense of a goal. It’s definitely the type of game that can be picked up and played for a few minutes here and there, so it serves its purpose as a one of the PSP Minis.

~Overall, the game isn’t a groundbreaking experience, but it’s a lot of fun, and it is perfect for those times when players have 5 minutes to hop on the PSP but don’t want to get into a full game. It's great for short bursts of fun, but it lacks gameplay modes. I would say it's worth the price of $2.99 (it used to be $4.99).
Total score: 7/10

koenigseggrocks on "Alien Havoc Review"

~Alien Havoc puts you in control of your very own little green Martian. Actually, you can customize your alien's head and body color to allow for aliens of any shade. The color change doesn't alter the gameplay, unfortunately. This is a bit of a snoozer.

~Your alien has come to Earth to steal its cows. To do this, you'll navigate a series of small maps, snagging cows while avoiding angry farmers. The goal is to secure every cow in your ship before being caught and forced to experience a scene from Deliverance. The controls are very simple, which is great. This is the type of game meant to be mindlessly easy but incredibly addictive. Its only flaw is that it's not fun.

~Picking up cows tends to alert farmers, who then charge after you. Because aliens have short stubby legs, you can't outrun the gangly humans, but you can throw cows at them (or rocks and cabbages). Tossing a cow at a farmer is pretty awesome. Just be careful, because cows get hurt when thrown. They can be healed with cabbage (of course), but it's best not to over-exert your bovine prize. You can also hide in the grass and wait for the farmer to wander back to his guard spot.

~The setup is good, but Alien Havoc is way too slow. If your alien moved quickly and there were tons of cows and crazy obstacles in your way -- you know, a true havoc -- this could be a great game. But it's level after level of snail-paced action and uninteresting solutions to your problems.

~Overall, this is a game that I would not recommend. If it was $2.99 instead of $4.99, then it would have been a better deal. Unless you like having an alien that moves as slow as a snail, and having to avoid farmers that move as fast as an ostrich (don't ask me why I chose an ostrich), then don't buy this game.
Total score: 4/10

Dracula Undead Awakening is a top down shooter based on mythic beings such as werewolfes, ghosts, zombies and much more. There is no real storyline to the game apart from you are a man who has the whole underworld trying to kill you. On this game there are four different game modes, survival, super survival, waves and rush.

Survival is where you start off with a basic pistol with 9999 ammo. The enemies are easy, slow and weak to start with, but the longer you stay alive, more kinds of enemy will attack. Enimies who dont get srtonger turn red or green. Green making them faster and red giving them more health. As you get futher in enemys will drop new weapons. (There are eight weapons.)

Super survival is survival with powerups to make it more exiting. There are three types of powerup. Time stop, rage and haste. Time stop obviously stops time for a few seconds leaving enemies vunrable for a moment, or letting you get to a far away weapon pickup. Haste raises your speed drastically letting you run circles around your foes. Rage makes you fire-rate alot quicker making you use your less powerful weapons.

Rush is proberbly the worst of all the game modes. At the start you get to choose from three different weapons, a chainsaw(exclusive to rush mode), minigun and flame thrower. Each weapon has infinate ammo since there are no pickups so have to keep to your one gun. The problem with this mode is if you stand at one place with the chainsaw the enemies cannot get you because your chainsaw kills them before they can hurt you.

Wave mode is my personal favorite. It is just like survival apart from when you kill an enemy they may drop a pile of money. you must collect this money for when a wave ends. Then you may buy heath vials, ammo and weapons.

There are only three maps. A graveyard, icy park and a gloomy castle. They are all basically the same but look different. Which is a bit of a dissapointment. But they are fine for casual playing.

There are eight weapons in the game and alot of perks. The weapons are pistol, shotgun, crossbow, grenade launcher, minigun, flamethrower and bfg. you usually pickup the weapons in the order i have put them in, the amount of money they cost also goes up in that order. You are enabled to unlock a perk at certain times. On rush, super survival and survival you get alot of different types of perks. But on wave mode there are only boost income, health, reloading speed and damage.

I rate this game a nine out of ten. The shooting, controls and graphics are amazing but it just needs more maps. I would reccomend this to any gamer looking for a cheap fun shooter.

koenigseggrocks on "Fortix Review"

~Just how fast should a cannon fire? It's possibly not the sort of thing that you're likely to think of when you go to bed at night, but it is a question I've been contemplating for the last few days.

~It's the fault of Fortix, see. Essentially a D&D themed remake of 1980s arcade title Qix, this PSP Minis effort throws you into a top-down landscape at centre of which is a fort that you have to reclaim.

~As a knight who travels on a 'baseline', you must fence off segments of the scenery by venturing from the safety of the baseline and capturing the largest amount of land, returning to the baseline before any of the hazards hit your or, crucially, the unfinished line you draw behind you as you move through open space.

~Those dangers involve dragons (three types of increasing ferocity exist), blood bats (which travel quickly along the baseline) and the aforementioned cannons.

~The latter are dotted around as turrets and, as with every other opponent on the map, must be boxed in so as to destroy them. Alternatively, encircling axe icons found on the landscape will result in the activation of a catapult and the obliteration of a cannon tower.

~Helping you further are power-up icons that appear randomly and give access to additional abilities such as a burst of speed, invincibility, cannon ball freeze, extra life, dragon freeze, one dragon kill, and extra time.

~Time is important because the game limits how much you have in each of the 12 levels, thereby forcing you to capture the land - and eventually the fort - as quickly as possible.

~It's a simple concept and one that proves addictive, although certain imbalances cause much frustration. Ignoring the odd bug that can result in the annoying loss of a life (you start with three); the power-ups last too brief a period (and with no visual or audio cue it's difficult to judge when they're about to run out), and they often appear in areas you have little chance of reaching before they disappear; and the difficulty curve seems uneven (I found the third level dastardly yet breezed through 10 and 11).

~The cannon fire, too, is both too fast and frequent - particularly when having to trudge through the slower parts of the map (your speed is affected by the type of terrain you're on). This effectively reduces your land capture ability into a baby step-like approach, rather than satisfying manly strides (unless you get lucky with a power-up).

~Adding to these issues are long loading times in between each retry (and you will face many retries) - or even when returning to the menu following a successful sortie - which is particularly annoying given the game's simple graphical treatment.

~It's particularly disappointing because there's an undeniable attraction at the heart of Fortix - you do keep coming back to it until you've seen the lackluster ending screen. The other thing is that the controls are unchangeable-you only use the D-Pad. This could get a little annoying sometimes. With a little more tweaking it could have been a title that found itself regularly in use, way beyond the week or so it will hold your interest.

gameplay

Age of zombies is a very fun and easy to play game. The campaign is basically around three stages and a boss stage. The campaign could be longer (it takes about an hour to complete) but then you have survival mode. On survival mode you choose from from 5 different stages and then you just go straight in!! Survival mode has timed waves that do not delay if you have not finished the current one, keeping you on your feet.
10/10
graphics

The graphics are well done on this game but could have less pixels but it suits the style of the charactars, small body huge head. All the colors are well done. And even when a cutscene occur and the camera zooms in the graphic are pretty good.
9/10

TOTAL 19/20 AMAZING

Halfbrick Echoes is a game released by Halfbrick Studios in Australia. It is now available for two platforms, both X-box 360 Arcade and as a PSP Mini. This highly addictive game with a unique game play comes at a cheap price and keeps making me turn on my psp for more fun.

In the game, one plays as a young girl named 'Charlie' who collects crystals throughout various artistic levels. After a crystal is collected, an 'Echo' appears, following the footsteps of the Character. The game is played from a top-down viewpoint where you use the analog (or D-pad) to maneuver your character away from enemies and towards the crystals. After the game is completed, the game allows the player to replay each level to shave seconds of your high score.

Halbrick Studios did an excellent job in the development of Echoes. The game sports a multitude of levels, different game modes, online leader boards (through X-Box Live), and a game that provides a unique gaming experience. I highly suggest purchasing this game for any person that enjoys an interesting game with a unique gaming experience.

First off i'd like to thank Gameloft for there amazing talent for making amazing games! But there was a few things i found i didn't like.
1) The Graphics. For a Display that has a lot more pixels then an iPod Touch, i think they could have done a MUCH better job! Look at the graphics in Dungeon Hunter (Also made by Gameloft) 10x the graphic power and still on the iPod Touch.
Now there was a lot things i LOVED about it!
First. The controls. They ported this game with AMAZING control features! (I'm kind of a fan of hard buttons) But still the port was amazing.
Over-all i think i'd give this Mini a 5-5, for its Controls and gameplay.
