The most recent PS+ post on the PS Blog reveals several SNK arcade games will be releasing as Minis soon. Here's what's coming, July 19th:

Guerilla War*
Athena*
HAL 21*
Ikari Warriors*
Marvin's Maze*
Sasuke vs. Commander*
Ozma Wars
Vanguard

The 6 titles with asterisks are games that were part of the recent, Japan/Asia-only SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 0. With 6 of the collection's 20 games being released as standalone Minis, I guess we aren't likely going to see Vol. 0 itself getting a release in the West. Of the 2 no-asterisk games, Ozma Wars is SNK's first game (and its Wikipedia entry also notes it's the first video game with disparate levels, as well as the first to use a life bar mechanic), and Vanguard is one of the first scrolling shooters (it scrolled both vertically and horizontally).

The same Store update will add 2 SNK NeoGeo titles, Baseball Stars 2 and KoF '95, presumably to the NeoGeo sections of the Store--however, the blog post only notes what looks like a PS3 price, so I can't tell if the titles are coming to the NeoGeo section for the PSP.

The SNK Minis will normally be priced at $3 each, but PS+ subscribers (such as those of us who activated our free 30 days late in the availability period!) will get Guerilla Wars as a subscription-time freebie and all the other titles at 20% off, a savings of 60 cents each.

I'm already backlogged even just on Minis, but thanks to the PS+ discount bit, I think I'll be jumping on the shoot'em-ups in the set: Ozma Wars, HAL 21, Sasuke vs. Commander, and Vanguard. Maybe I'll get Athena, too.

So guys -

I know Revoltin'Youth hasn't even dropped out the door yet, but we are here to tell you about our next Mini which is a fun melee combat based game called I Kill Zombies. The game is the brainchild of one of our new artists, a captain James Sharkey. I am working closely with Sharkey to give the game really fun game design mechanics and tons of content to boot...

Sharkey has some concepts done and we have settled on a similar visual style to The Binding of Isaac by the awesome Ed McMillen. The game should be released around October/November and will feature a whole lot of Characters, Blood, Gore, Inappropriate behaviour and fun... Also Zombies... it will most definitely contain Zombies.

Stay tuned anyhow as I will try to drop the first preliminary screens to you guys early next week :)

We are also working on something much much bigger which we will announce over on our official website during this years GDC/Gamescom event :D

And as if that wasn't enough, if there is a positive reception to Revoltin' Youth we might port our upcoming spin-off, Youths of Rage over to the Minis platform as well...

Its all coming up roses guys :)

Rock N' Roll,

Hi folks,

Aside from our super duper music game that is in development, we're also working on a classic 2D space shoot 'em up as a pet project - It has a few original and very cool twists which I'm going to keep under wraps for now, but I thought I would ask the community for suggestions:

What would you like to see?
What do you love about space shooters?
What annoys you about them?
What do we absolutely have to include?
What should we definitely not do under any circumstances?

Of course, we have our own ideas about what will make a cool game, but you guys/gals have been very supportive of our efforts so far, so it makes sense (to me at least) to consult you lot early on - after all we'll be asking you to buy the game eventually :)

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

James

OpenEmotion on "3 New PSP Minis (Or Playstation Suite games?)"

Hi Guys,

So, I dont know if anyone on here has heard but basically Open Emotion Studios got this big deal to work with an awesome company out in Sweden that were huge fans of (For a substantial amount of money) on a AAA game for PC and stuff and well... Were gonna be tied up with that and so initially we thought, I Kill Zombies, was going to be our last Minis type project, as one of the conditions of our contract is all of our development time must go towards this new project...

However... Here it comes... Weve decided that delivering awesome games to Playstation handhelds (And devices in general) is in our blood and as such weve decided that outside of office hours, Myself, Colm English and Eoghan O Donovan will create three new Minis ... Well heres the debatable point... Were wondering the 3 games we have, should we bring them to PS Suite instead of the Minis platform so they are playable across all Playstation Certified devices? We love Minis and theyve done so much for us, but were wondering should we look to PS Suite as the new PS Minis? It kinda seems like Minis arent getting the love and support from the platform holder as in the past.

To sum up the game types:

A Roguelike/Dungeon Crawler,
A R-Types Style game
and
A Contra/Metal Slug style shooter.

Thats all the info we have for now as we are still teasing out some of the design.

What do you guys think PS Minis or PS Suite? Would you like to play these on your PSP/PS3 or your PSV/Android Devices?

Rock n Roll,

FuturLab, the rather marvellous team behind the hugely addictive Coconut Dodge, have announced that their next, as-of-yet untitled project will have its score composed by Ivor Novello winner Joris de Man, the award winning composer behind Killzone 1 and 2 and the indie hit N+.

Their next project, a space adventure PlayStation Mini which promises innovative gameplay, is due in March 2012, and given the cold turkey I had getting off Coconut Dodge, it can't come a moment too soon.

From the press release:

From James Marsden, FuturLab's Managing Director:

“The team has developed some very innovative mechanics on this game, so we wanted to give it a big sound to complement the gameplay experience. We’ve been great fans of Joris’ work, both on the Killzone series and for the indie game N+, so we’re very excited that he’s onboard, and able to use his expertise to help realise our vision.”

Joris de Man added:

“It’s always exciting to be involved with indie projects; there’s an energy that comes from working with teams like FuturLab that’s contagious and fuels my ideas because they take risks where some can’t.

I really love the game mechanics that are being employed in the game; they bring a cool twist on a classic genre, something I love to do with music and its production. It’s going to be fun to delve into my Atari roots to bring an old skool flavor to the sound of this mini.”

Source

Sony claims there will be 50 games by the end of the year. The list below contains 46 games that have been announced so far. Not all of the games on the list have release dates, but I think it’s reasonable to expect a large majority, if not all, will land this year.

Hi Guys,

Paddy here from Open Emotion Studios. Just said I would start this thread so we could start feeding you guys some info about our upcoming title Ninjamurai. We know we had some hiccups late in the development of Mad Blocker Alpha which didn't help in getting the game out on time, however with Ninjamurai our development process has been vastly streamlined. We will be posting Dev blogs weekly on our site: http://www.openemotionstudios.com - The first 3 can be found at the following address -

http://www.openemotionstudios.com/category/ninjamurai-dev-blog/

Ninjamurai has really seen its fair share of twists and turns. it was the first game idea we had as a company and was originally intended to be a perpetual motion game along the lines of I must un or Canabalt. However, when we talked to Sony and got the go-ahead to start developing Minis we thought about expanding the games platforming elements. By the time we had finished designing Mad Blocker Alpha, Ninjamurai was no longer a Jump-N-Run style game and had instead morphed into an old school action platformer... think Revenge of Shinobi and Sonic 3 have a love child... That's Ninjamurai.

In recent weeks the art style too has seen an overhaul and I think you will be so impressed when the new art begins to surface. I know personally, that I am blown away with it... Also, Games like Dead Space 2 and inFamous have created a change in the type of score being created for Ninjamurai. Expect heavy percussion and deep ambient sounds, offset by large pounding chip/heavy music for set pieces, action scenes boss fights etc.

The boss fights are highly ambitious and could be the most advanced seen in any Mini (HOPEFULLY :P)

We're really excited about this project and expect it to release now in the first week of May. We gave ourselves an extra month because we learned the dark side of the beta testing period with Mad Blocker...

Anyways, Stay tuned you guys and look forward to showing you more of the game very soon!

Paddy M.
CEO, Open Emotion Studios Ltd.

Hiya,

We've come across a conundrum whilst developing our SpaceShooter game (which now has a name, to be revealed soon).

The game has a lot of controls - we're using all the buttons on the PSP for various functions, and someone suggested we ditch movement from the DPAD, and force players to use the Analog Stick for movement, which will free up the DPAD for cooler stuff, like weapon switching, and hot-teleporting to the nearest previous telepod - stuff like that.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Zork, One Epic Game's villain, pulled off his most malicious trick and managed to postpone OEG's North American release to August 2nd to stop you all from kicking his a$$.

Europe is still on schedule next week and you can still count with the PS Plus discount on both sides of the Atlantic ocean.

I hope you all will make him suffer for this by buying the game and achieving 100% completion! ;-)

JeremyR's going to like this news. I spotted an ESRB rating, for PSP and PS3, for SNK's early arcade shoot'em-up (and one of the very first scrolling shooters ever) Vanguard. The game's absence from the roster of the upcoming (in Japan) SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 0 was a little odd, but it looks like it will be a standalone offering, at least in North America. It's definitely not a PS1 Classic, since the only home ports of the game were for Atari systems (according to Wikipedia), and it's not a NeoGeo Station release, since the game predates the NeoGeo by over a decade. So, the PSP/PS3 rating means it's either a Mini or a dual-version release like with Tetris and Dragon's Lair; I'm betting on the former. Oh, there's also the possibility it's a PS3 exclusive that supports Remote Play, but doing that for a game of this age and graphical low definition seems rather silly. Well . . . I suppose it could be an HD remake with Remote Play, but I don't think SNK Playmore would make that kind of investment for Vanguard.

I'm going to bet the Star Trek: The Motion Picture theme is left out this time.
