Icon Games Posts Marble Boy Development Diary

MarbleBoyTitle

Icon Games has posted the first part of a development diary for their upcoming title, Marble Boy. It’s a lengthy and forthright look into the first stages of development of the game and well worth a read if you have any interest in the development side of the industry.

Also includes some work in progress shots (I’ve included a couple, below).

I know the game is in its early stages, but when I first saw the title Marble Boy, The images that came to mind and the screens, are totally different.

I imagined a cute little, well, Marble Boy, in Vertigo type levels with Toy Story like designs. A little marble out to save Marble Girl. Maybe Marble Girl is his sister, or maybe his girlfriend. Her being his sister would have brought a lot of charm to the game.

And in the future, I was thinking maybe she could have her own spin off, Ms. Pac-Man style, where Marble Girl has her own little adventure.

But it was at one point called, Vertigo Tilt & Roll, and the screens match up to that name.

My mind has always been too ambitious for it’s own good.

I was actually thinking of Marble Madness, which I guess this is somewhat like (though not as much as I remember) just based on the name.

But the logo actually makes me think of Sonic the Hedgehog. Don’t ask me why. But that would actually work, too. Sometime he walks, but then he could roll and do loops and such, like Sonic could.

Actually, funnily enough that is the story – and we’ve recorded some of the voice lines for both Marble Boy and Marble Girl. But as yet the screens aren’t showing that aspect of it at all; and I am really keen to make sure they do. I’d say right now we’ve only really started to put the Marble Boy elements in there and take it beyond what it originally was (Vertigo Tilt’n Roll).

We still have a way to go yet with visually finalising the look – we also intend to do a round or two of Beta testing for anyone who wants to give it a try.

Other aspects we need to finalise are things like the camera viewpoint; right now Marblke Boy is way too small to see any facial detail.

Great idea, and I’d say this is definately the direction we are heading in.

Haha, finally my brain had just the right amount of ambition! :D

If you guys are keeping on the path my mind wants you to, this will likely turn out to be my favorite mini to date. I actually had a good amount of fun with Vertigo, but the lack of a story and character to get behind held it back a bit. I honestly didn’t mind the difficulty all that much.

Is the Beta testing an in office type deal, or can anyone get in on it somehow?

  5. richicon says:

Beta testing will be open to anyone who fancies a go – it will be PC based, mouse controlled – but everything else will be exact to the PSP.

Cool. I look forward to getting a chance to try it out and giving you guys some feedback.

Fantastic – looking forward to letting you take a look.

We’ll let the guys at PSPMinis.com know as soon as we are ready for the Beta test run.
