Frima announces A Space Shooter for Two Bucks!

SpaceShooterTitle

Frima Studio, perhaps the makers of the highest quality Minis (at least in terms of production values), finally announced the title they’ve been teasing for some time, A Space Shooter for Two Bucks! Yes, that seems to be the name, though one wonders if they will change it for Europe.

We’ve known it was going to be a vertical shooter, though from the description it sounds more like a “shoot ‘em up” or “shmup” than classic arcade style space shooter like Galaxian or Gorf or Phoenix.

A Space Shooter for Two Bucks! features everything you’d expect: swarms of enemies filling the screens with hazardous bullets and missiles, heaps of upgrades for your ship and its arsenal, high-paced and constant action requiring deft reflexes, and hordes of alien baddies just waiting to be blown up by your superior space-faring skills.

It’s priced at $1.99 (which you probably guessed) and will be released in North America on Dec 21st. In an interesting twist, it will also be free for PSN+ members, the first time a new game will be free for them.

MickD from Frima is answering questions about the title in a thread on our forum. Already we know that they actually won’t be changing the name for Europe, and the game features 20 minutes of voice-overs.

Yup, looks like a Space Shooter to me, though space is really more black than purple

Galaxian and Phoenix are also shoot’em-ups. Not familiar with Gorf, myself.

Well, I think there’s a pretty clearly difference in between a shooter and a shoot ‘em-up. Basically the pace and number of bullets. Heck, I think Galaxian you could only have one bullet on the screen at a time. Most of the old ones only 2-3.

Essentially it boils down to you having to pick your shots vs simply holding down the fire button (or hitting it as fast as possible).

And Gorf was a game from Midway that sort of borrowed from all other shooters of the time. The first level was like Space Invaders, then there was one like Galaxian, then a couple of original ones, then you had a boss battle and it repeated, getting harder.

Is this the first free game to be released for PS+ upon release? Isn’t Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves the first one?

Well there is no highscore table per see, but we have a Survival Mode that records your best score and to “finish” it (that is to see every variations) you need to spend a whole hour in this mode… hope you will enjoy it…looking forward to see some highscore on this website ;)
