Closer Look at Halfbrick’s Upcoming Minis

halfbrick-blastoff-1Halfbrick Studios, famous for games like Avatar : Into the Inferno on DS and Heatseeker for PSP are trying their luck at Sony’s latest platform PSP minis, according to a recent Playstation blog entry . A company recognised for making handheld/casual games, this should be right up their alley.

Located in Brisbane, Australia, the company is well known amongst the XNA scene for their series of titles using the handle “Halfbrick Fridays”. The team has four projects currently in development for the minis, and are described to be ‘more polished versions of their existing titles’

The first of these titles is Halfbrick Blast Off which is a simple physics game set in space. The player will use the gravitational pulls of other planets to collect off-course astronauts and escort them back to safety. Their second title in development is Halfbrick Echoes where you play a schoolgirl collecting crystals in some really surreal environments, like on a block of cheese. *confused*

halfbrick-echoes-1The title is a top-down ‘collect ‘em all’ game where you get all the crystals in the level, and then reach the exit. Sounds simple enough, but you have enemies called ‘Echoes’ that basically follow along  footsteps you have just walked, so backtracking really isn’t going to be a wise option here!

halfbrick-echoes-2Their final two titles are Halfbrick Rocket Racing, which looks like a budget version of the age-old Micro Machines by Codemasters, and Halfbrick Zombies. In Rocket Racing however, you get control of both engines, both controlled with different buttons, making turning a little trickier than its old-skool inspiration. Halfbrick Zombies on the other hand is described as “a top-down shooter with style and flair through humour, intense action and zombie blasting!.” Little is known about this upcoming title, but to hazard a guess it sounds similar to Smash TV but a little more frantic and a lot more blood. Either way it sounds interesting!

Halfbrick Studios are aiming to get their titles on PSP minis as soon as they can, so expect to see them, or at least more news in the upcoming weeks.
