Widgets Odyssey Review

Widgets Odyssey is a platform adventure game set in space, that looks as though it could possibly be one of the top minis titles so far. Developed by Frima Studio who have had previous success with games like Zombie Tycoon and Vector TD.

Widgets Odyssey is set around five robots who’s planet was destroyed by the cosmic sneeze. Survivors of the cosmic sneeze were either propelled to another galaxy or taken prisoner by Yagor and his henchmen in a bid to create a devise to take over the universe. Your mission is to help five of the survivors evade Yagor and his henchmen and help guide them home to their families.

Before and after each episode you are shown a short cartoon about the character you are about to use or have used in the level, and though this is nice, unfortunately it is probably the biggest part of the game. With only four episodes and one mini game I was hoping each episode to be of a decent size but was sadly disappointed with each level taking less then a few minutes to complete and to complete the game takes less then an hour which really shows a lack of depth.

I did how ever enjoy the fact that each of the five characters in the game had a different feel to them, for example Spad can make extraordinary leaps while Bruce is extremely fast in movement but unable to make great leaps. The controls were very responsive with each character reacting how you would expect them to. Each character is fuelled by Drenalin which is you health/fuel which gradually decreases over time, once your health has reached zero it game over. Not to worry though as you can find Drenalin scattered through each level or after killing most of Yagor’s henchmen.

Each level though short was beautifully designed and with different tasks to do in each episode it does keep the game fun to play through out, but although fun the game is abit to easy and doesn’t really contain any challenge. You are able to interact with some part’s of your environment and a few NPC but in the end it doesn’t save the game from being only mediocre at best. Frima Studios have also included a high score table for each level but without being able to upload your score online it does feel a little pointless.

As I have said the biggest problem with the game although it is funny and enjoyable to play it really is far to short and really just to easy and with a price tag of £1.74 though cheap you can’t help but feel a little disappointed, hopefully though the sequel will be much longer and a little tougher.

Overall 5.5/10

I bought this and actually really enjoyed it. It was quite short, but I did get a couple of days fun gameplay from it. The pipe level with Monk took me a few attempts before I sussed it. The game feels nicely polished, albeit in a small bite-sized portion.

I think that for the reasonable price and the high production values that this is value for money. If you like this sort of game, I’d recommend it.

You realize this game is targeted at a relatively young audience right ?

I’d buy it, but you know Grace Chen.

I had no issues with Age of Zombies, and Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess being so short, so I probably won’t mind this either.

    Hello,

I also bought the game and it was a dissapointment. Though it is a funny looking game (cutscenes), I wasn’t able to pass the 3rd level (3rd level for gods’ sake!!!) after 6-8 tries, because of the cr*ppy controls, or I should say, the cr*ppy reactions of the character to its enviroment. Like: you can see the character should be able to reach a platform, and the next moment you’re under the same platform (there was many other problems for sure, I wouldn’t stop yelling with coders and/or the designers until they make it right). Also you have to time your jumps very well, otherwise you get caught by the raygun robots and loose a great amount of time, which is slowly draining, like the raybots punisment wasn’t enough. And when you find an energy crystal, it gave you like 3-4 pixels of time… very rewarding.
I think it is a funny looking game, I laughed on the 2-3 cutscenes I managed to see, but it could be a lot better. I don’t feel it polished, it seems like the developers had to finish it before it was really ready. The charater don’t react too well to the controls, which make the whole game kinda hardcore to me.
I’ve just deleted it, I was soo pissed off.

    Uff
