Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess – Upcoming Mini

monsters-probably-stole-my-princess-2Thank goodness for the carelessness of princesses. If it wasn’t for the likes of Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Princess Zelda being so careless and always getting themselves kidnapped then the world of video games would be a much more boring place.

Now, continuing that grand tradition of kidnapped princesses in games, we have the first mini from London-based development studio Mediatonic, the fantastically titled Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess (or MPSMP for short), due for release in February 2010.

In the game you control a “massively powerful (and slightly unhinged)” demon called The Duke, whose princess is stolen from her room in his castle. Obviously a keen video game fan, The Duke immediately assumes that monsters have stolen her and sets off to try and find her using the only means at his disposal – random violence on any monster he comes across!

According to Mediatonic, the game is an upwards-scrolling platformer in which the player has to chase after monsters and bash into them three times to subdue them. Each time The Duke touches a platform as he makes his ascent he will build up a combo, which increases his speed and power and enables him to unleash finishing moves on the monster. There are 24 levels in total, spanning across six unique worlds.

monsters-probably-stole-my-princess-3At over 95MB, MPSMP is one of the largest minis to be released so far, just shy of the minis limit of 100MB. This is what Mediatonic’s co-founder and creative director Paul Croft had to say about the game:

There is a lot of room for growth in the Minis section of the PlayStation Store and we truly hope that MPSMP will stand out as the fresh, original and fun title that it is. It’s a massively exciting game for us and we hope that our players will enjoy playing it as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. We’ve had a lot of experience in developing browser-based and iPhone titles, but this is the most ambitious game we’ve attempted.

MPSMP’s writer and designer, Jim Griffiths, commented on the game’s signature brand of dark humour:

We’ve worked hard to integrate the story and game mechanic as deeply as we can to create the most fun and compelling experience for the player possible. We’ve also crammed as much genuine (if slightly dark) humour into the game as we could – we really want people to crack a grin when they play. That’s our aim.

It sounds like MPSMP could also be one of the most adult minis to date, as it’s been rated 12+ for Violence, Sex and Bad Language by PEGI! All that plus the cool screenshots adds up a very intriguing package!
