Sony Confirms Minis Coming to PS3 17th December!

ps3-minis-1So it turns out that the rumours were true after all! Sony has now confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that the imminent (optional) PS3 system software update, 3.15, will enable the minis emulator to work on the PS3. According to the blog, Sony will have “the majority” of currently available minis ready to play on the PS3 from that date.

Any mini that you buy from the 17th will be compatible with both systems, and you’ll only need to buy it once and can then download it to either or both systems, whichever you prefer.

This is fantastic news for the minis programme in general, as for starters it will bring a lot of attention to the weekly minis update. Anyone who has a Nintendo Wii console will tell you that the weekly WiiWare updates (which often include small experimental games just like minis) attract a lot of interest when they’re announced.

This couldn’t be better news, as it’s highly likely that many more developers will be encouraged to participate in the minis programme, which should hopefully mean lots more minis on the way for all of us!

And once PS3 owners get to see what’s on offer and realise how cheap and easy to download minis are, they’ll be snapping them up, no question about it! Could the relaxation of Sony’s rules to allow the inclusion of multiplayer capability be next, we wonder?!

No profit for me, I have only PSP and not PS3…

This emulator works great for our game! Really impressed! :)

  3. barkiemailman says:

Is the 17th for Europe or something? The update is going up tomorrow for us in NA.

  4. Djax says:

What will be resolution of the minis on HDTV? Same as on PSP?

  5. JeremyR says:

That’s what I’m curious about. Will it upscale it? Or put it in a little box.

    that picture is beautiful,
not only because of what it depicts (fieldrunners on ps3!), and the effects,
but because of the fact that the tv is also a Sony! :)
then again, what else would it be?

  7. Evar says:

    I guess it’ll be upscaled.
    Let’s wait and see. :)

  8. Ruven says:

Sweet I plan on playing Pac-Man C.E. on both my PSP and PS3.

  9. igotmy9milli says:

It gets up scaled to fill the whole screen. Some games will look worse than others I think. I think it is 17th in Europe but maybe I am wrong? Not sure about US though….

  10. JeremyR says:

Well, the firmware update is apparently out (I don’t have a PS3, just curious how it works). From a thread on NeoGaf and on another site PSNStores, apparently only a few work right now (Kahoots, Zombie Tycoon in the US, Echos, Blast Off, Stand of Food in the EU).

I guess the 17th is when all (or most) will work. I guess the minis will have some sort of configuration file included for the emulator, and will have to be re-downloaded.

Had a shot of Kahoots, looked pretty good on the PS3. Better than hooking the PSP up to it (had a comparison on NeoGaf)

  11. Maura says:

I’ve just downloaded the firmware to my PS3. The only minis I have available on my PS3 account at the moment are Kahoots, Tetris and Funky Punch, all of which I’ve just re-downloaded, and I can confirm that none of them are working on the PS3 as yet. I’m in the EU. Going to try and get all the others on there later and see what works.

  12. Maura says:

Further update: I’ve got most of my UK minis on the PS3 now, and the only ones that are working on there are, to confirm what JeremyR says, Echoes and Stand O’Food. I also have Breakquest working which is, quite frankly, off the chain and looking and playing amazing on the PS3!!

  13. Zoibie says:

This is from the EU PS Blog

“The facility has been included in the firmware, but the games need replacing on the store with the versions that are playable on both formats – this is happening next week “
